HP PSC 700, HP PSC 900 Series, and HP Digital Copier 310 - Replacing Ink Cartridges
Introduction
Supported HP ink cartridge part numbers
Black - C6615D, also known as #15 black
Tri-Color - C6578A, also known as #78 color
Tri-Color - C6578D, also known as #78 color
caution:Only use the Hewlett-Packard print cartridges that are designed for this product. Installing a print cartridge that is not specifically designed for this product might cause the ink cartridge to fail or damage the product.
Printing with HP print cartridges is more economical than commercial printing or printing with other ink jet products. The cost per page varies depending upon the amount of ink coverage on the printout, the printing mode, and the price of the cartridge, but offers cost efficiencies to businesses.
Checking the ink level on HP PSC products
The HP PSC products have an Estimated Ink Level screen in the product Toolbox software. (This software is unavailable when using the drivers that are built into Microsoft ® Windows XP). The product tracks ink usage based on the number of drops of ink that are sprayed.
If a low-ink warning message appears, press Enter to clear the message, and then printing can continue. These warning messages appear early enough to give the user time to obtain a new ink cartridge before the cartridge is empty; they do not prevent printing. By clearing the message each time it appears, it is possible to continue printing until the ink cartridge is completely empty.
When colors are no longer correct or the print becomes faded, the ink cartridge is empty and needs to be replaced. If the product is receiving faxes you might consider changing the ink cartridge when the warning message appears to avoid missing a fax.
The ink counts are usually accurate; however they can become inaccurate if ink cartridges are exchanged with another product. An exchange would result in the actual ink remaining being lower or higher than the amount indicated by the ink level screen.
Use the following steps to check the ink level on these products.
-
Click Start, and then select Programs.
-
Locate and open the HP product software folder from the list of programs. This might be found listed under Hewlett-Packard on some products.
-
Click HP Toolbox or just Toolbox. The Toolbox dialog box appears.
-
Select the Estimated Ink Level tab. The estimated ink levels appear.Figure : hp psc 900 series Toolbox
Replacing the ink cartridges
Use the following steps to replace the ink cartridges in the product.
-
Make sure that the product is turned on when replacing the ink cartridges.
-
Locate and raise the print cartridge access door on the front of the product, above the output tray. The print cartridge carriage moves to the middle of the access area.Figure : Raising the front access door
-
Lift the latch on top of the cartridge that is to be replaced.Figure : Raising the cartridge latches
-
Grasp the handle at the top of the cartridge, pull the cartridge forward, and then lift the cartridge up to remove it.
-
Remove the replacement cartridge from its packaging. Be careful to touch only the black plastic.
-
Gently remove the blue protective tape covering the ink nozzles. Do not try to peal off the printed circuit from the back of the cartridge.Figure : Removing protective tape
-
Push the cartridge firmly down into the slot, with the label facing you.Figure : Inserting the cartridge
-
Lower the latch down onto the top of the cartridge and push down until the latch locks firmly into place.Figure : Latching the ink cartridge in place
-
Close the print cartridge access door.
-
Press Enter on the control panel when prompted to align the print cartridges.
Correcting the problems that cause the “check, replace, or wrong black or color ink cartridge” error message to appear
The “check, replace, or wrong black or color ink cartridge” error message indicates that the ink cartridge is not making good electrical contact, is flawed, or is the wrong cartridge.
Use the following steps to diagnose and correct the problem.
-
Open the front of the product to gain access to the print cartridges.
-
Remove the ink cartridge that is indicated in the message, and then look at it. Make sure that the cartridge has the correct part number. If the cartridge is wrong, find the correct cartridge and install it. If the cartridge has the correct part number, reinstall it.
-
Close the lid.
-
If the error message continues to appear after a few seconds, remove the cartridge.
-
Unplug the power cord from the back of the product.
-
Clean the electrical contacts on the ink cartridge with a soft clean cloth that has been dampened (not wet) with clean water. The contacts are located on the opposite side of the main label. Each contact is very small and shaped like a rounded square.Figure : Clean the cartridge contacts
-
Clean the contacts in the print carriage inside the product by using the same soft clean cloth. Wait about five minutes for the contacts to dry.Figure : Clean the contact points in the cartridge carriage
-
Reinsert the cartridge.
-
Plug the power cord in to the product again.
-
If the problem persists, replace the existing ink cartridge with a new cartridge.
-
If the problem persists after trying all of the steps above, contact HP Customer Support to arrange to have the product serviced.
Using refilled ink cartridges and ink cartridges that are marketed by other companies
Hewlett-Packard does not support the usage of refilled or ink cartridges marketed by other companies. Hewlett-Packard Technical Support will not address any print quality issues that may result from the use of refilled or non-HP ink cartridges.
If you experience any print quality issues while using refilled ink cartridges, please contact the company that provided the refill or cartridge.
In addition, these cartridges can damage the product electrically or by leakage. The use of non-HP or refilled print cartridges alone will not affect either the warranty or any maintenance contract purchased from HP for its products. However, if the product fails, or is damaged, as a direct result of using a modified or refilled Inkjet print cartridge, the repair will not be covered by the warranty or by the maintenance contract. Consequently, standard time and materials charges will be applied to repair the product for that particular failure or damage.
Hewlett-Packard printing products and print cartridges are designed as part of an entire printing system, which is tested extensively to ensure exceptional performance across a wide range of conditions. Considerable time and effort was spent in creating the ink formulas that are used by HP Inkjet products. Hewlett-Packard’s patented ink formulations are optimized to provide excellent print quality, water and fade resistance, and compatibility with the cartridge and product components. Hewlett-Packard believes that the highest quality print and most reliable operation of the product will be obtained when genuine HP Inkjet cartridges are used with HP Inkjet products.
Specific issues resulting from incompatible ink and refilled ink cartridges
Using refilled in cartridges and incompatible inks result in the following problems.
-
Refilled ink cartridges might leak and cause product damage. One method for refilling ink cartridges is to drill a hole through the cartridge, refill the ink, and then plug it. In some cases this plug does not hold, and the ink runs into the product and damages the printed circuit boards.
-
Refilled ink cartridges frequently exhibit spotty printing or fail to print. This problem might be a direct result of the nozzles being plugged with dried ink. Because the vents of the refilled cartridges have been opened, air is able to enter the cartridge and dry the ink.
-
Refilled ink cartridges might exhibit lower print quality, for the following reasons.
-
Printing algorithms used to create the various colors are based on HP inks. Using incompatible inks might result in color matching problems.
-
Refilled cartridges might have damaged nozzle orifices, result in various problems with print quality.
-
Hewlett-Packard products use a time delay between pages to accommodate the properties of the specific media type and ink being used. This prevents smearing problems from one page to the next. Using incompatible ink will alter the effects of this time delay and might result in poor print quality.
-
-
Hewlett-Packard products might not recognize refilled ink cartridges. The refilling process may involve altering the ink cartridge enough that the product is unable to recognize it. The condition of the print cartridge electrical contacts deteriorates with use. This also results in the product being unable to recognize the refilled cartridge.
-
Refilled ink cartridges might get stuck in the product. Because the cartridges from other manufacturers have been altered, cartridges might become stuck in the product. This problem might require that the product be disassembled to remove the cartridge.
-
Hewlett-Packard cannot predict the long-term effects on product reliability from using different ink formulations.
