HP OfficeJet Pro 9010, 9020 Printers - First Time Printer Setup

This document is for HP OfficeJet Pro 9010, 9010e, 9012, 9013, 9014, 9014e, 9015, 9015e, 9016, 9018, 9018e, 9019, 9020, 9020e, 9022, 9022e, 9023, 9025, 9025e, 9026, 9028, OfficeJet 9012, 9012e, and Premier All-in-One printers.
To set up a printer for the first time, remove the printer from the box, connect the power cord, install the ink cartridges, load paper, and then align the printhead.

Step 1: Remove the printer from the box

Remove the printer from the box and all tape, stickers, and packing materials from the printer.
  1. Remove the printer from the box.
  2. Remove the film from the printer control panel.

  3. Lift the scanner lid, remove the packing material from the scanner glass, and then close the scanner lid.

  4. Recycle the packing materials.

Step 2: Connect the power cord and set your preferences

Plug the printer into an electrical outlet, turn on the printer, and then set your preferences.

Do not connect a USB cable at this time. The connection to the computer is established during software installation.
  1. Connect the power cord to the rear of the printer, then plug the other end of the power cord into an electrical outlet.

  2. If the printer does not turn on automatically, press the Power button.
  3. To set your preferences on the printer control panel, touch your preferred language, and then touch Confirm.
  4. Touch your country/region.

Step 3: Install the ink cartridges

Install the HP ink cartridges that shipped in the box with your printer.
  1. Open the front door, and then lift the ink cartridge access door.
    The carriage moves to the center of the printer.

  2. Wait until the carriage stops moving before you continue.
  3. Remove the ink cartridges from the box, and then remove the film from the ink cartridges. Be careful to only touch the black plastic on the ink cartridge.

  4. Insert the ink cartridges into their slots.

  5. Close the front door and ink cartridge access door.

  6. On the printer control panel, touch OK.

Step 4: Load paper into the input tray

Load plain, U.S. letter, or A4 paper in the input tray, and then align the printhead with an automated tool.
  1. Pull out the input tray, and then remove the packing materials.

  2. Load plain white paper into the input tray with the short edge forward and the print side down.

  3. Slide in the paper width guides in until they rest against the edges of the paper.

  4. Insert the input tray into the printer.

  5. On the printer control panel, touch OK.
  6. Align the printhead.
    • If there is a prompt to align the printhead, touch OK to continue with the alignment.
    • If there is no prompt to align the printhead, select Align Printhead from the Setup menu on the control panel.

  7. Open the scanner lid, and then place the alignment page on the scanner glass. Place the page face down with the top of the page aligned to the engraved guides near the back corner of the glass.

  8. Close the scanner lid, and then touch Scan.
    The printer scans the alignment page, and an Alignment Successful message displays on the control panel.

Step 5: Install the printer software

Your HP printer hardware is now set up, and you can install the printing software. Do not attempt to connect the printer to a computer until instructed to do so during software installation.
