This document provides the procedures to remove and replace the hard-disk drive.

Before performing service
Turn the printer power off

Disconnect the power cable.
warning:
To avoid damage to the printer, turn the printer off, wait 30 seconds, and then remove the power cord before attempting to service the printer. -
Disconnect either the USB cable or the network ethernet cable.
caution:
This part contains components that are electrostatic discharge (ESD) sensitive. To reduce the possibility of ESD damage, always touch the sheet-metal chassis to ground yourself before touching an ESD sensitive part.

Required tools

No special tools are required to install this kit.
After performing service
Turn the printer power on

Reconnect either the USB cable or the network cable.

Connect the power cable.
-
Use the power switch to turn the power on.
Post service test
Print a configuration page to make sure that the printer is functioning correctly.

Remove the output bin.
-
Remove the output bin by pulling up on the edge of the bin closest to the output flap, tilting it away from the product, and then pulling the assembly up.Figure : Remove the output bin

Remove the formatter.

Disconnect the thumbscrew, and then pull the access cover up.Figure : Remove the access cover

At the back of the product, disconnect two thumbscrews.Figure : Disconnect the rear thumbscrews

At the front of the product, grab the formatter assembly handle and pull the formatter out of the product.Figure : Remove the formatter

Remove the HDD.

On the formatter printed circuit-board assembly (PCA), press the tab at the edge of the HDD, and then slide the drive out of its holder.Figure : Remove the HDD

Unpack the replacement HDD.

Dispose of the defective part.
note:
HP recommends responsible disposal of the defective part. -
Unpack the replacement part from the packaging.
caution:
Some parts are sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD). Always perform service work at an ESD-protected workstation or mat. If an ESD workstation or mat is not available, touch the sheet-metal chassis to provide a static ground before touching an ESD-sensitive assembly. Protect the ESD-sensitive assemblies by placing them in ESD pouches when they are out of the printer.
caution:
If the replacement part is a roller or pad, avoid touching the spongy part of it. Skin oils on the roller or pad can cause paper pickup and/or print-quality problems. HP recommends using disposable gloves when handling rollers or pads or washing your hands or before touching rollers or pads.note:
Make sure that all of the shipping materials (for example shipping tape) are removed from the replacement part prior to installation.

Install the HDD.

On the formatter PCA, slide the new drive into its holder and connect it to the formatter.Figure : Install the HDD

Install the formatter.

Insert the new formatter into the slot at the front of the product.Figure : Insert the new formatter

At the back of the product, fasten the two thumbscrews.Figure : Fasten the rear thumbscrews

Reinstall the formatter access cover by sliding it down into place and then fastening the thumbscrew.Figure : Install the new cover

Install the output bin.

Reinstall the printer firmware.

Reconnect the power cable, and then press the power button to turn on the product.Figure : Reconnect the power cable, turn on the product

Once the product is in the Ready state, the new drive requires a firmware update. To get the firmware file, go to www.hp.com/support/ojcolorX555 or www.hp.com/support/ojcolorMFPX585.

Select Cross operating system (BIOS, Firmware, Diagnostics, etc.). Locate the firmware download, and then select Download.

Copy the firmware upgrade file to the root directory of a USB flash drive. The firmware upgrade file has a .bdl extension.

Insert the USB flash drive into the USB port in front of the product control panel (X555 models) or on the product control panel (X585 models).

The following message displays on the control panel: Error: 99.09.63 Incorrect Disk. Touch the OK button to continue.

Wait for the Pre-Boot menu to appear on the control-panel display, and then touch the down arrow button to scroll to 3: Administrator. Touch the OK button to select it.

Touch the down arrow button to scroll to 6: Manage Disk. Touch the OK button to select it.
-
Touch the down arrow button to scroll to 2: Erase / Unlock. Touch the OK button to select it.
-
The message Proceed with Requested Action displays. Touch the OK button to select it.

Touch the back button to return to the Pre-Boot menu home screen.

Touch the down arrow button to scroll to 3: Administrator. Touch the OK button to select it.
-
Touch the down arrow button to scroll to 1: Download. Touch the OK button to select it.
-
Touch the down arrow button to scroll to 3: USB Thumbdrive. Touch the OK button to select it.

Touch the down arrow button to scroll to the firmware upgrade file that you downloaded earlier. Touch the OK button to select it.
note:
If no .bdl files are listed, try saving the file to a different USB flash drive. -
Wait while the file transfers. When the transfer is complete, the message Complete displays on the screen.

Turn the product off, remove the USB flash drive, and then turn the product on. Wait for several minutes while the product initializes.
