HP Color LaserJet MFP M180 - Paper Jam Error

This document is for HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M180n, M180nw, and M181fw printers.
During a print job, the printer stops feeding pages, and the Attention light on the printer control panel blinks. One of the following messages might display, depending on your printer.
  • An Er/04, Er/05, or Er/06 displays on the printer control panel.
  • A Jam in input tray, Jam in output bin, or Document feeder jam. Clear and reload. message displays on the printer control panel.
Clear the printer of any jammed paper, or reset the printer if the printer has no jammed paper.
  note:
Paper jams can be real or false. The printer might report a paper jam even when there is no jammed paper. The following steps apply to both real and false paper jams.
Step 1: Look for jammed paper
Confirm any error messages that display, and then use one of the following sections to find and clear any paper that might be stuck in the area of the printer indicated by the message. If the error message does not indicate a specific area, or if no error message displays, use all the following sections to clear jammed paper from the printer.
If you have removed all jammed paper from the printer and the error persists, continue to the next step to reset the printer.
Step 2: Reset the printer
Sometimes a paper jam error persists even though there is no jammed paper (false paper jam). Resetting the printer might clear a false paper jam error.
  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
      note:
HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  8. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  9. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
Step 3: Use genuine HP toner cartridges
Non-HP cartridges can cause paper jams. If you have non-HP toner cartridges installed, install genuine HP toner cartridges. For more information, go to Replacing Toner Cartridges.
Step 4: Try to print again
Try to print again to make sure the hardware functions correctly. If the problem persists, continue to the next step.
Service or replace your HP product if you completed all preceding steps.
