Remove and Replace the Memory Modules for HP Pavilion 15-abXXX Notebook PCs

This document applies to HP Pavilion 15-abXXX notebook computers.

Before you begin
  • Have available a pair of tweezers and a Phillips-head screwdriver.
  • Turn off the computer. Disconnect the Ethernet or modem cable. Disconnect the power cord.
  • Transfer the computer to a clear, flat, stable work surface over a non-carpeted floor.
  • HP strongly recommends the use of an anti-static wrist strap and a conductive foam pad when working on the computer.
  • Do not remove a component from its protective packaging until you are ready to install it.
  warning:
Before starting, power off the computer and wait for components to cool before starting these procedures.
  caution:
This product contains components that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). To reduce the chance of ESD damage, work over a noncarpeted floor, use a static dissipative work surface (such as a conductive foam pad), and wear an ESD wrist strap connected to a grounded surface.

Removing the memory modules
To remove the memory modules, first follow the instructions to remove the battery, the optical drive, the rear corner covers, and the base enclosure, then follow the steps to remove the memory modules.

Find the battery lock latch identified by the lock icon on the bottom of the computer and slide it to the unlock position.

Find the battery release latch identified by the battery icon and slide the battery release latch to the release position to partially eject the battery.

Lift the front edge of the battery and remove the battery from the battery bay.

Now remove the optical drive.
Remove the 6.5 mm P1 Phillips-head screw that secures the optical drive to the base enclosure.

Grasp the optical drive bezel and carefully slide the optical drive out of the base enclosure.

Remove the rear corner covers
Remove the two 12 mm P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the corner covers to the base enclosure.

Carefully lift the corner covers to disengage the tabs that secure them to the base enclosure and remove.

Now, remove the base enclosure.
With a pair or tweezers, remove the two Mylar screw covers from the base enclosure.

Remove the thirteen 6.5 mm P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the base enclosure to the top cover.

Remove the two 5 mm P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the base enclosure to the top cover.

Carefully separate the edges of the base enclosure from the top cover...
  caution:
To prevent damage to the base enclosure, take extreme care when separating the area around the optical drive bay from the top cover.

Find the memory modules.

Push both arms outward simultaneously to release the memory module to the spring tension position.
  caution:
When handling a memory module, use care to prevent touching the memory chips on the board. Touching the memory chips could damage or destroy the memory.

Grasp the memory module by the edges and pull gently to remove it.

Place the memory module in a static dissipative bag.

Use the steps in this section to replace the replace the components and the memory modules.
Step 1
Grasp the memory module by the edges and align the notch in the memory module with the key in the memory module slot on the system board.

At an angle, gently insert the memory module into its slot on the system board.

Press the memory module down to latch the arms.

Slide the base enclosure onto the display panel hinges.
  caution:
Ensure that the wireless antenna and display panel cables are free from being pinched between the base enclosure and top cover.

Place the base enclosure into position on the top cover. Apply pressure to the edges of the base enclosure to snap it into place.

Replace the two 5 mm P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the base enclosure to the top cover.

Replace the thirteen 6.5 mm P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the base enclosure to the top cover.

Place the two Mylar screw covers into position on the base enclosure.

Align the corner covers with the base enclosure and press down on the corner covers to secure them into position.

Replace the two 12 mm P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the corner covers to the base enclosure.

Insert the optical drive into the optical drive bay...

Replace the 6.5 mm P1 Phillips-head screw that secures the optical drive to the base enclosure.

Insert the rear edge of the battery into the battery bay and lower the battery until it is properly seated and the battery release latch clicks.

Slide the battery lock to the lock position to secure the battery.
