HP Color LaserJet Pro M252, M274, M277 Printers - Setting Up the Printer Hardware

This document is for the HP Color LaserJet Pro M252n, M252dw, MFP M274n, MFP M277n, and MFP M277dw printers.

Complete the steps in this document to set up the printer hardware before you install the printer software on the computer.

Unpack the printer

Remove the printer from the box, and then remove all packing materials from the printer.

Remove the printer from the box.

Remove any tape and packing material that is on or around the printer.
Lift the scanner lid, remove the protective packing material from the scanner bed, and then close the scanner lid.

note:
If your printer does not have a scanner, skip to the next step.

Check the contents of the box

Make sure that you remove all hardware and materials from the box before discarding or recycling the box.

The contents might vary by country/region. See the packaging for a list of items shipped in the box.

Load paper into the main input tray

Before you install the cartridges, load the input tray with paper.

Pull out the paper input tray.

Slide the paper width and length guides to their outermost positions.

note:
If you want to load legal-size paper, pull the front and rear of the tray to extend it.

Load the paper in the input tray, print side up. Slide the paper forward until it stops.

Slide the paper width and length guides inward until they stop at the edges of the paper.

note:
Do not overload the paper input tray. Make sure that the stack of paper fits within the tray and is no higher than the top of the guides.

Insert the paper input tray back into the printer.

note:
If you extended the paper input tray for legal-sized paper, the tray does not sit flush with the printer body when inserted.

Connect the power cord, and then set the language and country/region

Plug the printer into a power source, turn on the printer, and then select your preferences.

caution:
Do not connect a USB cable at this time. The printer prompts you to connect the USB during the software installation.

Step 1: Connect the power cord

Connect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

Connect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then plug the other end of the power cord into an electrical outlet.

Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

Step 2: Select the language and country/region

Select the instructions for the control panel display type of your printer.

2-line control panel display (M252n only)

On the printer control panel, press the right or left arrow to select your preferred language, and then press OK to confirm your choice.
Press the right or left arrow to select your specific country/region, and then press OK.
Press the right or left arrow to set the month, day, and year, and then press OK.
Press the right or left arrow to set the time, and then touch Continue.
When the Default Settings options display, select one of the following:
- Self-Managed: Settings for environments like homes and home offices.
- IT-managed: Settings for a connected office environment administered by an IT professional.
You can also select Print Information Sheet to learn more about the different options.
Press OK.

Touchscreen display

On the printer control panel, touch your desired language, and then touch Yes to confirm the selection.
Touch the display to select your specific country/region, and then touch Yes.
Scroll the display to set the month, day, and year, and then touch Continue.
Scroll the display to set the time, and then touch Continue.
When the Default Settings options display, select one of the following:
- Self-Managed: Settings for environments like homes and home offices.
- IT-managed: Settings for a connected office environment administered by an IT professional.
You can also select Print Information Sheet to learn more about the different options.
Touch Continue.

Install the cartridges

The toner cartridges are already installed in your printer. During the setup process, loud noises from the printer can be heard.

The noises are normal, and part of the setup process for the toner cartridges.
