Try these few simple steps first:
-
Use the flatbed scanner rather than the document feeder.
-
Use high-quality originals.
-
When the document feeder is used, load the original document into the feeder correctly, using the paper guides, to avoid unclear or skewed images.

Check the scanner glass for dirt or smudges
Follow these steps if the printout has streaks, unwanted lines, black dots, poor print quality or unclear text.
-
Use the power switch to turn off the product, and then unplug the power cord from the electrical socket.
-
Use a soft, lint-free cloth or a sponge that has been moistened with nonabrasive glass cleaner, and clean the following:
-
the white plastic backing on the underside of the scanner lid
-
both the large and small scanner glass panes, if multiple glass panes exist
-
-
To prevent spotting, dry the glass and white plastic with a chamois or cellulose sponge.
-
Plug in the product, and then use the power switch to turn on the product.
caution:Do not use abrasives, acetone, benzene, ammonia, ethyl alcohol, or carbon tetrachloride on any part of the product; these can damage the product. Do not place liquids directly on the glass. They might seep under it and damage the product.
note:In certain areas of California, air pollution control regulations restrict the use of liquid Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) as a cleaning agent. In those areas of California, please disregard the previous recommendations and use a dry, lint-free cloth. The cloth may be moistened with water if desired.
Check scanner resolution and color settings on the PC
If you are using PC scanner software, ensure that the resolution and color settings in the software are optimized for the image. Use the following resolution and color guidelines to optimize the settings.
note:Setting the resolution and color to a high value increases the file size and the scan time.
