Replacing the Printhead for HP Officejet Pro 8500A e-All-in-One Printer Series

Introduction

This document contains steps for removing the printheads from the product, and then installing replacement printheads.

Replacing the printheads

Follow these steps to remove the old printheads, and then install the replacement printheads.

Step one: Load the paper tray

Follow these steps to load paper into the main tray (paper tray 1).
  1. Lift the output tray until it locks in an open position.
  2. Pull the bottom of the tray toward you until it stops.
  3. Slide the paper width guides to their outermost positions.
  4. Insert up to 250 sheets of plain white paper in the center of the tray, with the print side down and short edge forward. Make sure that the stack of paper aligns with the engraved lines in the tray.

  5. Slide the paper width guides inward so they rest on the edges of the paper.

  6. Push the bottom of the tray toward the product until it locks into place.
  7. Lower the output tray.

Step two: Remove the old printhead

  1. Open the carriage access lid.
  2. Touch Change Printheads on the product control panel. The carriage moves to the access area on the left side of the product. Wait for the carriage to stop moving.
      caution:
    Do not proceed until the carriage is on the left side of the printer. If the carriage does not move to the left automatically, turn the printer off and on, and then touch Change Printheads on the product control panel again. The printhead can be damaged if the carriage is not all the way to the left for installation.
  3. Lift the printhead latch.

  4. Lift the handle of the old printhead, and then use it to pull the printhead out of its slot.

Step three: Install the new printhead

  1. Shake the printhead up and down at least six times while the printhead is still in its packaging.

  2. Remove the printhead from its packaging, and then remove the orange protective caps from the nozzles.

  3. Hold the printhead by its sides with the nozzles toward the product, and then insert the printhead into its color-coded slot.
    • Insert the black/yellow printhead into the slot on the left.
    • Insert the magenta/cyan printhead into the slot on the right.

  4. If needed, repeat these steps to install the other printhead. Make sure that you shake the other printhead back and forth six times before installing it.
  5. Lower the printhead latch, and then press down until the latch snaps into place.

  6. On the control panel display, touch Done.
  7. Close the product lid. The product initializes the printheads, and then prints the alignment pages. This could take several minutes.
