Replacing Cartridges for HP Deskjet 5100 Color Inkjet Printer Series

Introduction

This document explains how to replace the cartridges.

Replacing cartridges

Follow these steps in the order given to install a replacement cartridge.

Step one: Prepare the cartridge

Remove the cartridge from its packaging and carefully remove the plastic tape.

  caution:
Do not touch the cartridge ink nozzles or copper contacts. Touching these parts will result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections. Do not remove the copper strips. They are required electrical contacts.

Step two: Replace the old cartridge

note:
The following graphics show the tri-color cartridge being replaced in the left carriage slot. If you replace the black cartridge, use the right carriage slot.
  1. Open the printer lid and wait for the carriage to move to the middle of the printer.
  2. When the carriage is idle and silent, lift the cartridge latch to the open position.

  3. Slide the old cartridge out of its slot.

  4. Insert the new cartridge into the slot at a slightly upward angle with the copper contacts facing down and toward the printer.

  5. Press firmly until the cartridge clicks into place.
  6. Push down on the cartridge latch until it snaps shut.
  7. Close the top cover. The product automatically prints a calibration page.
