HP Designjet 500, 510, and 800 Series Printers - SODIMM Memory Installation

Introduction

The HP Designjet 500, 510, and 800 series printers can have additional SODIMM memory installed on the HP-GL/2 accessory card (500, 500ps, 510), or the formatter card (800, 800ps).
To prevent damage to the printer circuits from high-voltage electrostatic discharge (ESD), follow the Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Precautions before following the SODIMM installation instructions:
  1. Do not wear clothing that is subject to static build-up.
  2. Do not handle integrated circuits (ICs) in carpeted areas.
  3. Do not remove an IC or a printed circuit assembly (PCA) from its conductive foam pad or conductive packaging until you are ready to install it.
  4. Ground (earth) your body while handling IC's or PCA's (wrist strap, etc).
  5. After removing any PCA from the printer, place it on a conductive foam pad to prevent ESD damage to any ICs on the PCA.

Instructions

Follow the instructions below to successfully install SODIMM memory onto an HP Designjet 500, 510, or 800 series printer.
  1. Turn the printer off and disconnect the power cable.
  2. Remove the LAN card cover from the back left-hand (as viewed from the front) side of the printer.

  3. Unscrew the two screws that secure the formatter (or HP-GL/2) card.
Figure : Removing fastening screws (formatter card shown)
  4. Remove the formatter (or HP-GL/2) card.
  5. All formatter/HP-GL/2 cards are equipped with a memory expansion slot. The expansion slot is a beige plastic strip with a metal securing tab on each end. Locate this expansion slot on your formatter or HP-GL/2 accessory card.

  6. Install the SODIMM as follows:
    1. Line the keyslot on the memory SODIMM up with the keytab on the fomatter (HP-GL/2) card.
    2. Hold the SODIMM at roughly a 45-degree angle to the formatter (HP-GL/2) card.
Figure : SODIMM at 45-degree angle
    3. Continuing to hold the angle, insert the memory SODIMM into the memory expansion slot on the formatter card until you can no longer see the gold contacts on the memory SODIMM.
      Figure : SODIMM installation
    4. With the gold contacts no longer visible, press down on the upper corners of the SODIMM until the memory SODIMM lays parallel to the formatter card and the metal tabs on the edge have grasped the memory SODIMM (usually will hear an audible click).

  7. Reinstall the formatter card into the printer and tighten the screws.
  8. Re-install the LAN card cover.
  9. Connect the power, and turn the printer on. Reboot the printer, and test functionality.
To remove a SODIMM, follow the ESD precautions, turn the printer off, remove the formatter card, press outward on the two metal tabs (which will release the SODIMM, and flip it to a 45-degree angle), and then remove the SODIMM.
