HP Designjet Printers - Cutter not Working Properly (Original HP Designjet through the CP Series)

Introduction
The automatic cutter on an HP Designjet printer can be disabled in several ways. Follow the steps below to troubleshoot the cutter, determine the cause, and resolve the issue.
Cutter is turned off through the front panel
  1. With the front panel displaying Status Ready, press the ENTER key.
  2. Scroll to Device Setup, and press ENTER.
  3. Scroll to Cutter, and press ENTER.
  4. Select On, and press ENTER.
  5. Press the PREVIOUS or BACK key until Ready appears on the display.
  6. The automatic cutter should now work properly.
Cutter is not working with Take Up Reel (TUR) installed
When a TUR is installed in the printer and turned on, the HP Designjet printer will automatically turn off the cutter.
  1. With the front panel displaying Status Ready, press the ENTER key.
  2. Using the Arrow keys, scroll to Device Setup, and press ENTER.
  3. Scroll to TUR Installed, and press ENTER.
  4. Select No, and press ENTER.
  5. Press the PREVIOUS or BACK key until Ready appears on the display.
  6. The automatic cutter should now work properly.
Cutter does not cut at the proper times
When internal printer margins are set to Expanded or Smaller the printer has a delay in cutting compared to when the margins are set to Normal (which cuts immediately following the print and dry time). Change the internal margin setting to Normal and try again:
  1. With the front panel displaying Status Ready, press the ENTER key.
  2. Using the Arrow keys, scroll to Page Format and press ENTER.
  3. Scroll to Margins and press ENTER.
  4. Scroll to Normal and press ENTER.
  5. Press the PREVIOUS or BACK key until Ready appears on the display.
  6. The printer should now cut immediately following the completed print and drying time.
Cutter is turned off through the Windows HP-GL/2 printer driver
  1. Access the printer driver in Windows.
  2. Select the Advanced tab.
  3. Ensure that the Disable automatic cutter option is not selected. If so, remove the checkmark from this option, click Apply and then OK.
  4. Attempt to re-print the file to verify cutter functionality.
Other possible causes
Listed below are some other known causes of cutter malfunction.
The use of non-supported memory
Use supported HP memory
An external Raster Image Processor (RIP) that is overriding the printer's cutter settings
  • Send print jobs through the standard printer drivers and/or printer Demo prints.
  • If printer cuts properly using the driver or printing Demo's, contact the manufacturer of the RIP for solutions.
An internal problem with the cutter has occurred
  • Print a Demo print from the front panel of the printer.
  • If the Demo print cuts, the problem is most likely file related.
  • If the Demo does not cut, further troubleshooting is required. Click here for information on how to contact HP support at http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/eng/contact_us.htm.
