HP Designjet Printers - Software Palettes Versus Printer Palettes

Issue:
HP DesignJet printer family - software palettes/ pen settings versus printer palettes / pen settings.
Solution
The HP DesignJet family printers can be set up to use a pen palette defined on the printer or defined by the software.
  note:
The HP provided Windows driver overrides the Pen settings set from the front panel or setup sheet. Therefore, pen setting information must come from the software or driver. Current Windows drivers do not allow for any type of pen settings.
The HP DesignJet 200, 220, 230, 330, 430 printers
Pen settings are selected through the setup sheet.
  • One customizable palette of eight pens. The pens can be different line widths and/ or shaded (that is, screened).
The HP DesignJet 250C, 350c, 450c printers
Pen settings are selected through the setup sheet.
One customizable palette of eight pens. The pens can be different line widths and/ or 6 different colors.
HP DesignJet A, B, 600, 700 Printers
Pen settings are selected under the Pen Settings menu.
  • One factory palette that cannot be changed.
  • Palette A & B: Two different customizable palettes of 16 pens each. The pens can be different line widths and/ or shaded (that is, screened).
HP DesignJet 650C, 750c, 755cm, 750c plus Printers
Pen settings are selected under the Pen Settings menu.
  • One factory palette that cannot be changed.
  • Palette A & B: Two different customizable palettes of 16 pens each. The pens can be different line widths and/ or different colors.
Software Palette
When the printer is set to PALETTE = SOFTWARE, the pen setting information must come from the software. Refer to the software documentation or software vendor for the capabilities of the software.
Printer-Defined: When a custom palette is configured on the printer
Advantages
  • Setting up the palette on the printer may give an easier selection process.
  • A user can set up different palettes to use with drawings and the palettes will be there to use again and again.
  • A sample color chart defines color numbers specifically.
  • Pen widths are in millimeters already and do not need to be converted to inches.
Disadvantages
  • Only 8 pens or 16 pens can be defined (depending on the DesignJet model).
  • Not very usable for a network environment because palette settings for one user may not be what another user wants.
  • The HP provided Windows driver overrides the Pen settings set from the front panel or setup sheet. Therefore, pen setting information must come from the software or driver.
Software-Defined
Advantages
  • Up to 256 pens can be defined (software dependent on actual number of pens available).
  • More suitable for network users.
Disadvantages
  • May require some trial-and-error work in order to sort out the colors that you want to use.
  • Few software applications allow software definition of pen palettes.
