HP Deskjet 1220c and HP Deskjet 1180c Series Printer - Potential Conflicts with the Toolbox

Introduction
The Toolbox may conflict with other printer drivers or software programs. One workaround is to uninstall the printer driver and use the Custom option to reinstall the printer driver without the Toolbox. The symptoms of the problem are any of the following:
  • Fatal Exception errors
  • All printer icons disappear from the Printers folder
  • Other printers do not respond when a print job is sent
      note:
These symptoms can also occur from problems unrelated to the Toolbox.
Uninstall the printer driver
Follow the steps below to uninstall the printer driver:
  1. Restart Windows (click Start, then click Shut Down, and then click Restart).
  2. Click Start, then click Programs, then click HP Deskjet 1220C Printer.
  3. Click Uninstaller.
  4. Click Remove All (default), then click Next.
  5. When the message "Uninstall completed" appears, click OK.
      note:
If the Uninstaller fails to complete successfully, restart Windows, reinstall the printer driver to connect to LPT1 (the printer does not need to be physically connected to the LPT1 port), and run the Uninstaller again.
Reinstall the printer driver without the Toolbox
Follow the steps below to reinstall the printer driver without the Toolbox:
  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Close any unnecessary programs that are running on the computer using the following steps.
    1. Right-click any program appearing on the Taskbar next to the Start button and click Close.
    2. Repeat Step 2a until all the programs appearing on the Taskbar are closed.
  3. Insert the HP Deskjet 1220C or HP Deskjet 1180C Starter CD into the CD-ROM drive. The Starter CD will automatically run when the CD is inserted, if the Autorun feature is enabled. If the CD does not Autorun, the following steps may be used to run the installation program:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the "Open" box, type the letter of the CD-ROM drive followed by :\SETUP and press ENTER. For example, if the CD-ROM drive letter is D, type D:\SETUP and press ENTER.
  4. Click Install Printer Software from the menu.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the driver installation.
  6. When asked if install will be Typical or Custom, click Custom.
  7. Under Utilities, uncheck HP Deskjet 1220C Toolbox.
  8. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the driver installation.
If the conflict is not resolved by following the steps above, the Toolbox may be reinstalled.
Cause
Software or hardware conflicts can occur between different devices installed on the computer. Devices connected between the printer and the computer may affect the timing of the bidirectional signals used by the Toolbox. In addition, the software installed for any of the devices may conflict with the Toolbox. Devices that may be connected to the computer's parallel port include, but are not limited to, printers, external tape drives, external disk drives, external CD-ROM drives, security lock keys (dongles), and scanners.
