HP Printers - Using HP Support Assistant Software with Your Printer (Windows)

This document is for HP printers and computers with Windows 10, 8, or 7.
Use HP Support Assistant software to find printer information, such as firmware and driver updates, warranty status, serial numbers, and specifications. HP Support Assistance also provides automated fixes and troubleshooters to help resolve common printing issues.
Step 1: Check the requirements
Before you use HP Support Assistant, make sure the printer and your computer meet the following requirements:
  • The printer is set up, turned on, and in a ready state.
  • The printer is connected to your computer.
  • The computer with Windows 10, 8, or 7 is connected to the Internet.
Step 2: Check your computer for HP Support Assistant
HP Support Assistant might already be installed on your computer. Search Windows for HP Support.
  • If HP Support Assistant displays, continue to the next step to add your printer to My devices.
  • If HP Support Assistant does not display, go to HP Support Assistant (in English), and then click Download HP Support Assistant. Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the software, and then continue to the next step.
Step 3: Add your printer to My devices
Add your printer to My devices. If you have already added your printer, skip to the next step to troubleshoot printer issues.
  1. Search Windows for HP Support, and then select HP Support Assistant in the list of results.

  2. If a Welcome to HP Support Assistant window opens, select the notification preferences, and then click Next
    A My devices window opens and automatically detects HP devices connected to your computer or network.
  3. Check for your printer in the list.
    • If your printer displays, click Add to my devices.
    • If your printer does not display, click Add an HP device, click Detect my device, and then select your printer in the list of results.

  4. Type a nickname for your printer, and then click Add to my devices.

  5. Click Scan for updates and messages.

  6. Select any updates in the Updates available list, and then click Download and install.

    Once the updates complete, the printer displays in the My devices window.
Step 4: Troubleshoot printer issues
Use the Diagnostics and tools tab to troubleshoot common printing issues, such as paper jams, wireless connection issues, and scanning problems.
  note:
Use the Updates tab to make sure your printer is up to date before troubleshooting.
  1. On HP Support Assistant, select your printer in the My devices list.
    The printer support options window opens.
  2. Click the Diagnostics and tools tab.

  3. Select the link that applies to the printer issue.
    HP Support Assistant can troubleshoot many issues, including the following:
    • Print jobs stuck in queue
    • Printer wireless connection issues
    • Copying issues
    • Carriage and paper jams
    • Faxing issues
    • Printing and scanning issues
    • Changing printer connection type
      note:
    Troubleshooting options vary by printer model.
