HP PCs - Using Microsoft Edge Browser (Windows 10)

Use Edge to browse the Internet.

In the Windows search for and open Edge, or click the Microsoft Edge icon.

The first time you open Microsoft Edge, the start page opens.

note:

To change the page that displays when you open Microsoft Edge, see Change the opening page in this document.

Use the Favorites tool to add a website to your Favorites and to open your favorite websites.

1. Open the website you want to add to your Favorites, and then click the Favorites icon .
   
2. To change the name of the website (optional), type the new name in the Name field, and then click Add.
   
3. To save the website in your Favorites bar or another location, select the location you want from the Save in drop-down menu.
4. To open one of your favorite websites, click the Hub icon , click the Favorites icon , and then click the website you want to open.
   

Use the Favorites tool to add a website to your Reading list.

1. Open the website you want to add to your reading list, and then click the Favorites icon .
   
2. To add a website to your Reading list, click the Reading list icon , change the name in the Name field (optional), and then click Add.
   
3. To open a website on your reading list, click the Hub icon , click the Reading list icon , and then click the website you want to open.
   

Microsoft Edge allows you to view your Start and Home tabs, create new tabs, see a quick preview of active tabs, set tabs aside, and restore tabs you previously set aside.

• To create a new tab: Click the New tab icon on the tabs bar.
• To view your Start tab: Click the Start icon on the tabs bar.
• To view your Home tab: Click the Home icon on the address bar.
• To view a preview of active tabs: Click the Show tab previews icon on the tabs bar.
• To set your active tabs aside: Click the Set these tabs aside icon on the tabs bar.
• To view, manage, and restore tabs previously set aside: Click the See all your tabs icon on the tabs bar. To restore tabs, click Restore tabs on the Tabs you've set aside window. To add the tabs to your favorites or share them, click the More icon .
  
• To mute a tab playing audio: Right click on the volume icon on the tab. On the drop-down menu select Mute tab.

Use the Hub menu to read eBooks in Microsoft Edge.

1. Click the Hub icon , and then click the Books icon .
   A list of books you own displays.

   note:

   To pin a book to the start menu, right-click the book, and then select Pin to Start.

   
2. Select the book you want to read.

   note:

   To purchase a new book, click Shop for Books, and then follow the on-screen instructions to purchase books in the Microsoft Store.

3. After the book opens, click the right side of the browser window to turn the page. Click the left side of the browser window to turn to the previous page. Click above the text to open a reading menu with the following options:
   • Table of contents
   • Manage bookmarks
   • Search
   • Font size
   • Read aloud
   • Add a bookmark

In Microsoft Edge, you can use Reading view to simplify the view. You can also change the brightness of the screen and size of the text.

1. Open the website you want to read in Reading view.
2. To Adjust the font size (optional), click the More icon , and then click the plus or minus signs in the Zoom area.
   
3. In the address bar, click the Reading view icon .
   The webpage opens in Reading view.
   

You can use the Add Notes tool to circle and highlight items, draw shapes, and add notes on a webpage. Then you can save a screenshot of the annotated webpage to OneNote, your Favorites, or your Reading list.

Click the Add notes icon .

• To assign a color and a size to the Pen tool, click the Pen icon , choose a line color, and then use the slider to adjust the line width.
  
• To assign a color and shape to the Highlighter tool, click the Highlighter icon , choose the highlighter color, and then use the slider to adjust the line width.
  
• To remove notations or highlights, click the Eraser icon, and then click the notation or highlight to be removed.
• To add a typed note to a webpage:
  1. Click the Add a note icon , place your cursor where you want the note to display, then click.
  2. Type your note in the text box.
     
  3. If you want to remove the note, click the Trash icon.
• To save a page to your Favorites, Reading List, or OneNote:
  1. Click the Save Web Note icon , and then select OneNote, Favorites, or Reading list.
  2. Click Save.
     
• To share the annotated page, click the Share Web Note icon, select the method of sharing, such as Cortana Reminders, and then follow the on-screen instructions to share the webpage.

  note:

  If you want to share only a portion of the webpage, click the Clip icon to select the portion to share.

Use the Hub to view your web browsing History pages.

1. Click the Hub icon and then click the History icon .
   A list of time periods displays.
   
2. Select the desired time period to view your browsing history.
   Browsing history for the time period displays.
   
3. To clear all your history, click Clear history.

Use the Hub to view your current and past downloads.

1. Click the Hub icon on the right side of the address bar, then click the Downloads icon .
   A list of your downloads displays.
   
2. To clear your downloads, click Clear All.

Adjust Microsoft Edge settings to change the first page that displays when you open Microsoft Edge.

1. Click the More icon , and then select Settings.
   
2. Select an option from the Open Microsoft Edge with drop-down menu.
   • Start page: Opens the Microsoft Edge Start page.
   • New tab page: Opens a new tab page.
   • Previous pages: Opens the page that was active last time you closed Microsoft Edge.
   • A specific page or pages: Opens a page or set of pages that you choose. Type the URL of the webpage you want Edge to open with in the Enter a URL box, and then click the Save icon.
3. To specify how to open new tabs, select Top sites and suggested content, Top sites, or A blank page from the Open new tabs with drop-down menu.
   

Use the More menu to install extensions.

1. Click the More icon , and then select Extensions.
   
2. Scroll down the list of suggested extensions, and then click Explore more extensions.
   The Store opens in a new window.
   
3. Select the desired extensions in the Microsoft Store, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install and launch them.
4. Close the Store, and then return to Microsoft Edge.
5. Read the extension permissions notification, and then click Turn it on.
   The installed extensions display in the Microsoft Edge More menu.
   

Use the More menu to change the default search engine.

1. Browse to the URL of the search engine you want to use as the default.
2. Click the More icon , and then select Settings.
   
3. In the General menu, select Advanced.
4. In the Address bar search area, click Change search provider.
   
5. Select the desired search engine, and then click Set as default.

Change the default web browser in Windows Settings.

1. In Windows, search for and open Default apps.
2. In the Web browser area, click the current web browser.
   
3. In the Choose an app window, select the browser you want to use as your default browser.

   note:

   If the browser you want to use as the default browser does not display, click Look for an app in the Store to download a new browser to use as the default browser.

Use the Hub to import your favorites from other web browsers.

1. Click the More icon , and then select Favorites.
2. In the Favorites window click Import from another browser.
   
3. In the Import or export window, select the radio button next to the desired browser in the Import your info area, and then click Import.
   

Use the Microsoft Edge tools to perform tasks such as opening a new window, zooming in and out, and printing.

To open Microsoft Edge tools, click the More icon .

• To open a new browser window, click New window. A new browser window opens.
• To open a private browser window, click New InPrivate window. InPrivate browsing allows you to browse the web privately. This feature is designed to keep personal information, such as login information and browser settings, hidden from other people using the same computer.
• To change the view size, click the plus or minus symbol (+ or –) in the Zoom area.
  • To make the view smaller, click the minus icon repeatedly until the percentage number matches your needs. The view size changes each time you click the icon.
  • To make the view larger, click the plus icon until the percentage number matches your needs. The view size changes each time you click the icon.
• To view browsing history, click History.
• To view download history, click Downloads.
• To add an extension, click Extensions.
• To print a page, click Print. A preview window opens. Select the printer and the desired settings, then click Print.
• To find text on a page, click Find on page. The Find on page box opens on the left side of the screen. Type the text you want to find.
• To read a page aloud, click Read aloud. Cortana begins to read the currently displaying webpage.
• To pin the current webpage to your taskbar, click Pin this page to the taskbar.
• To change Edge settings, click Settings.
• To send feedback to Microsoft about Edge, or to get help with Edge, click Help and feedback.
• To pin available tools to the address bar, click the Show in toolbar menu.
• Click More tools for the following additional options:
  
  • To Add notes to a webpage, click Add notes
  • To Share a webpage, click Share this page. This feature allows you to share webpages using email, social media, Bluetooth, your compatible mobile device, or OneDrive
  • To cast videos, pictures, and audio, click Cast media to device. This feature allows you to wirelessly stream media from your browser to any compatible device on your network.
  • To open a page with Internet Explorer, click More tools, and then click Open with Internet Explorer. The current page opens in Internet Explorer.

    note:

    Some legacy or enterprise websites might not be compatible with Microsoft Edge. If you attempt to open an incompatible legacy site, Microsoft Edge displays a message prompting you to open the page in Internet Explorer 11.

  • To pin the current webpage to the Start menu, click Pin this page to Start.

Use the Settings menu to clear web browser data.

1. Click the More icon , click Settings, and then click Privacy & security.
   
2. In the Clear browsing data area, click Choose what to clear.
3. Select the items you want to clear, and then click Clear.
   

Microsoft Edge settings allow you to enable or disable features, and to change your privacy and service settings.

• General: Configure your browser theme and homepage, download location, and Windows sync preferences.
  Click the More icon , and then click Settings.
  
• Privacy & security: Configure Privacy settings such as do not track requests, search suggestions, and show or hide search history. Set Security settings such as pop-up blocking and Windows Defender SmartScreen settings.
  Click the More icon , click Settings, and then click Privacy & security.
  
• Password & autofill: Choose to allow Edge to save passwords, form data, and credit card information.
  Click the More icon , click Settings, and then click Passwords & autofill.
  
• Advanced: Enable or disable Cortana in Edge, Adobe Flash Player, or media autoplay, configure proxy settings and website permissions, select apps to open certain websites, and change your internet search provider.
  Click the More icon , click Settings, and then click Advanced.
  

When you perform a search in the Microsoft Edge address bar, Microsoft Edge uses personalized information that you provided to Cortana to make your search results more relevant to you. For example, if you type local weather in the Bing search bar, the search results show weather information for your location. To change your location, click Change next to the location displayed on screen.

In addition, if you find a topic that you would like to know more about, highlight the word or phrase in the webpage, right-click it, and then select what you want Cortana to do:

• Copy: Copies the highlighted word or phrase.
• Select all: Selects the entire webpage.
• Search the web for "...", where "..." represents the highlighted word or phrase: A new tab or window with more information and related links opens.
• Ask Cortana about "...", where "..." represents the highlighted word or phrase: A Cortana window with more information and related links opens.
• Read aloud: Cortana reads the page aloud. Use the Read aloud toolbar to exit, pause, rewind, fast forward, or change the voice of Cortana.
  

The Nearby Sharing feature lets you share webpages over Bluetooth to nearby Windows 10 PCs.

1. To enable Nearby Sharing, click the Action Center icon , and then click the Nearby Sharing tile. Do this on all PCs that might use Nearby Sharing.
   
2. To share a link to a webpage in Microsoft Edge, click the Share button in the upper-right corner of Edge. When the Share window opens, select the PC with which you want to share.
   When the receiving PC accepts the shared link, Microsoft Edge opens to that webpage.
