HP Color LaserJet CM1015 and CM1017 MFP - Install HP print and scan software on a Windows computer

Introduction

Windows users can use this document to find out how to obtain the most features for HP Color LaserJet CM1015 and CM1017 Multifunction Printers (MFPs). To view the recommended solution for another printer, go to one of the following links:

What you need to know

The HP Color LaserJet CM1015 and CM1017 MFPs have in-operating system (In-OS) print and basic scan drivers included in Windows. When you connect the printer to the computer using a USB or network cable, Windows detects the hardware and automatically searches for and installs the correct driver. While you will not receive a notification, you will be able to print and to scan using a WIA-compliant application. You do not need to download any software or insert the printer CD to enable this basic functionality.
However, these basic drivers do not include the HP Scan application and other features provided on the printer CD or in a full feature solution. The latest full solution developed by HP for this printer is available only for the Windows Vista operating system. To enable the HP Scan application and other full software features in newer Windows operating systems, customers can install the HP software created for Windows Vista and run the files on a Windows 10 or Windows 8/8.1 PC in compatibility mode. To do this, follow the steps provided in this document.
note:
For instructions on how to run the files on a Windows 7 PC, go to Install HP print and scan software on a Windows 7 computer.

How to run HP printer software for Windows Vista on a newer Windows computer

First locate the HP printer software created for Windows Vista, and then modify the files to run on the Windows PC in Windows Vista compatibility mode.

Step one: Locate the HP software for Windows Vista

Locate the HP software files on either the CD that came with the printer, or by downloading the full solution from hp.com.

Printer CD

If you have the printer CD for Windows Vista (32-bit or 64-bit), follow these steps:
  1. Copy the entire printer CD for Windows Vista to the hard drive of the Windows PC.
  2. Browse to the location where the files were saved and then continue to Run the .exe files on a newer Windows PC in Windows Vista compatibility mode.

Download from www.hp.com

If you do not have the printer CD, download the software from HP.com. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Go to www.hp.com/support and click Drivers & Downloads.
  2. Type the printer name or model number in the search box, and then click Go.
  3. Select your printer from the results.
  4. Select your language from the drop-down list and then select the Windows Vista operating system (32-bit or 64-bit).
  5. Under the Software section, locate the HP Color LaserJet ... Full software Solution and then click Download.
  6. Click Save or Save as, browse to the location where you want to save the .exe file, and then click Save.
    note:
Before you can run the software on a newer Windows PC in Windows Vista compatibility mode, you will need to modify the file properties. See Run the .exe files on a newer Windows PC in Windows Vista compatibility mode.
  7. Browse to the location where you saved the .exe file and then double-click the file to launch the WinZip Self-Extractor.
  8. Browse to the location where you want to save the extracted files, clear the When done unzipping open: autorun.exe check box, and then click Unzip.
    Figure : WinZip Self-Extractor
  9. When you receive notification that the all files have unzipped successfully, click OK.

Step two: Run the .exe files on a newer Windows PC in Windows Vista compatibility mode

Four (4) executable (.exe) files need to be run in compatibility mode to install the solution on a newer Windows PC. Each of these 4 files (autorun, hpzsetup, HPZstub, and Setup) needs to be modified before it can be successfully run in compatibility mode on the Windows PC.
After copying the printer CD or downloading the full solution driver software on a Windows PC, the following components are extracted to the Windows PC:
  • Toolbox FX
  • Scan Application
  • Solution Center
  • Print Driver
  • Uninstall Utility
  • User Guide
  • Twain and WIA Scan Drivers
To modify and run the .exe files on a newer Windows PC in Windows Vista compatibility mode, follow these steps:
  1. Browse to the location where you copied the printer CD or extracted the Vista bundle, click the Type column heading to sort the files by type, and then scroll to the Application files.
  2. Locate the following 4 executable (.exe) files:
    • Autorun (.exe)
    • Hpzsetup (.exe)
    • Hpzstub (.exe)
    • Setup (.exe)
    note:
These 4 files may not show the file type extensions (.exe) when listed in the Full Software Solution folder.
  3. Modify the .exe files one at a time.
    1. Right click the .exe file you want to modify and select Properties.
Figure : .exe files listed in the Full software solution folder
    2. Click the Compatibility tab.
    3. Select the check box Run this program in compatibility mode for:, and then select Windows Vista (Service Pack 2) from the drop-down list.
      Figure : Selecting compatibility mode
    4. Click Apply and then click OK.
    5. Repeat for EACH of the 4 .exe files.
  4. After the 4 files are set to run in compatibility mode, double-click the autorun.exe file you saved earlier to launch the install wizard.
    note:
If you receive a User Account Control prompt, click Yes to allow the changes; and if you receive a prompt to install .NET Framework 3.5, click Download and install this feature, and wait while Windows searches for, downloads, and then installs the required files. Restart the computer and then try again to double-click the autorun.exe file.
  5. On the top of the setup screen, click Install Software and then follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.
