HP Z620 Workstation - Removing and Replacing PCI Card Guide/Front Fan Assembly

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the PCI card guide/front fan assembly for the HP Z620 Workstation.
Minimum skill level
The End User requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the PCI card guide/front fan assembly that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

  note:
For customers in countries/regions with RoHS legislation (e.g. EU, China, etc.) restricting the use of hazardous substances in electrical equipment. The use of the "Original" spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Modified" spare number, the "Modified" spare part must be ordered as the replacement part. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Original" spare number, please order the "Original" spare number as the replacement part. In this case, either the "Original" or the "Modified" spare number may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

This video was developed using a pre-production version of the workstation. The chassis and parts shown might not exactly match the current production version, but the part removal and replacement steps are the same.
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to the product or loss of data.
  2. Disconnect the front fan cable from the system board.
  3. Press the release latch and remove the auxiliary power cable connectors from the holding slots in the PCI card guide.
      note:
    One or both cables might have been attached to any full-length PCIe cards removed.
  4. Press the top of the PCI card guide and pull back to disengage the two release tabs.
  5. Rotate the PCI card guide back and lift until the tabs on the bottom of the card guide are released.
  6. Rotate the PCI card guide on its vertical axis about 15° until it is able to clear the front and side chassis rails.
  7. Lift the PCI card guide straight up and out of the chassis.
PCI card guide/front fan assembly replacement
  1. Hold the PCI card guide vertically at about a 15° angle and lower it into chassis.
  2. Rotate the PCI card guide parallel to the front of the chassis and insert the tabs at the bottom of the card guide into the slots on the chassis pan.
  3. Rotate the PCI card guide against the front chassis wall and push until it snaps into place.
  4. Replace the auxiliary power cable connectors into the holding slots in the PCI card guide.
      note:
    If any full-length PCIe cards are reinstalled, connect the cables to the cards.
  5. Connect the front fan cable to the system board.
