HP ProBook 6460b Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Keyboard

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the keyboard for the HP ProBook 6460b Notebook PC.
Minimum skill level
The End user requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.
Tools required
  • Small, Phillips-head (P0 and P1) screwdrivers

The replacement part number will vary depending on the keyboard that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

  note:

The use of the Original Spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If your unit contains a part that is labeled with the Modified Spare number, the Modified Spare must be ordered as the replacement part. If your unit contains a part that is labeled with the Original Spare number, please order the Original Spare as the replacement part. In this case either the Original Spare or the Modified Spare may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

Keyboard removal
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
      note:
    The following video depicts a specific configuration of the notebook. The same removal and replacement procedures apply to all configurations of the notebook.
  2. Loosen the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws (identified with keyboard icons) that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
  3. Place the notebook on its side and open the display panel.
  4. While supporting the notebook, insert a tool into the opening in the battery bay and gently press in to partially release the keyboard from the top cover.
  5. Turn the notebook right side up.
  6. Lift the rear edge of the keyboard and rotate the keyboard toward the front of the notebook until one has access to the keyboard ribbon cable and ZIF connector.
  7. Using minimal force, lift the locking bar up on the keyboard ZIF connector and disconnect the keyboard ribbon cable from the system board.
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  8. Using minimal force, lift the locking bar up on the point stick ZIF connector and disconnect the point stick ribbon cable from the keyboard.

    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  9. Remove the keyboard from the base enclosure.
Keyboard replacement
  1. Position the keyboard on the notebook so that one has access to the keyboard ribbon cable and ZIF connector.
  2. Insert the point stick ribbon cable into the point stick ZIF connector on the keyboard and press the locking bar down to lock the cable into place.
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  3. Insert the keyboard ribbon cable into the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board and press the locking bar down to lock the cable into place.
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  4. Rotate the keyboard toward the center of the notebook and insert the tabs on the front of the keyboard into the slots on the top cover.
  5. Lower the keyboard into position and press along the edges of the keyboard to secure it to the top cover.
  6. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  7. Tighten the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws (identified with keyboard icons) that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
