HP Photosmart C6200 and C7200 All-in-One Printer Series - 'Printer alignment failed' Message Displays on the All-in-One

Issue
The message Printer alignment failed appears on the control panel display of the product.
The following video demonstrates the steps for printing an alignment page. The product shown in the video is the HP Photosmart C7280. The outside of the product might look different, but the steps are the same for your product.

  IMPORTANT: You must follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.
Solution one: Load the correct type of paper and align the All-in-One
Follow these steps to load the correct type of paper and align the product.
Step one: Load the correct type of paper
If you load color, photo, or used paper in the tray when you align the product, the alignment might fail. Follow these steps to load the correct type of paper.
  1. Pull out the input tray.

  2. Slide the paper width guide to the left.

  3. Remove all the paper from the input tray.
  4. Load unused, plain white letter or A4 sized paper with a brightness level of at least 85 into the tray. Slide the stack of paper forward until it stops.
      note:
    Look for the brightness level on the paper packaging.

  5. Slide the paper width guide inward until it stops at the edge of the paper.
  6. Push in the input tray.

Step two: Align the All-in-One
  1. On the product control panel, press the Setup button ().
  2. Press the Down Arrow button () to select Tools, and then press OK.
  3. Press the Down Arrow button () to select Align Printer, and then press OK. The product prints an alignment page, aligns the printhead, and then calibrates the product.
  4. After the success or failure message appears on the control panel display, press OK to continue.
  5. Check the alignment page to see if it printed correctly.
    • If the alignment page printed correctly, stop troubleshooting.
    • If the alignment fails or the alignment page does not print correctly, continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Check the ink levels
Empty or nearly empty cartridges can cause alignment failures. Follow these steps to check the ink levels in the cartridges.
  1. Press the Setup button () on the product control panel.
  2. Press the Down Arrow button () to select Tools, and then press OK.
  3. Press the Down Arrow button () to select Display Ink Gauge, and then press OK.
    The ink gauge, which shows the estimated ink levels in all installed cartridges, appears on the product control panel display.

    • If any of the cartridges are empty or nearly empty, replace them.
    • If the cartridges are not empty or nearly empty, continue to the next solution.
Solution three: Clean the printheads and align the All-in-One
Follow these steps to clean the printheads and try the alignment again

Follow these steps to clean the printheads.
  1. Load unused, plain white letter or A4 sized paper into the tray.
  2. Open HP Solution Center:
    HP Solution Center opens.
  3. Click Settings ().
  4. Under Print Settings, click Printer Toolbox. The Printer Toolbox opens in a new window.
  5. Click the Device Services tab.
  6. Click Clean the Printhead.
  7. Follow the prompts on the screen, and then click Done.
Step two: Align the All-in-One
Print another alignment page.
  • If the alignment page printed correctly, stop troubleshooting.
  • If the alignment fails or the alignment page does not print correctly, continue to the next step.
Solution four: Clean and reseat the cartridges, and align the All-in-One
Follow these steps to clean and reseat the cartridges, and to align the product.
Step one: Clean and reseat the cartridges
If the cartridges do not touch the contacts on the printhead, the alignment fails. Follow these steps in the order presented to clean and reseat the cartridges.
  note:
The product shown in the following graphics might not look exactly like your product, but the steps are the same.
  1. Gather the following cleaning materials:
    • Lint-free cloth or swab. Eyeglass wipes and coffee filters work well.
    • Distilled, filtered, or bottled water.
        caution:
      Do not use tap water, alcohol, or platen cleaners.
  2. Press the Power button () to turn on the product, if it is not already on.
  3. Open the cartridge access door.

  4. Squeeze the tab below the black cartridge located on the far left side of the carriage, and then lift the cartridge latch.

      note:
    The cartridge areas are color-coded for your reference. From left to right, the cartridges are black, yellow, light cyan, cyan, light magenta, and magenta.
  5. Pull the cartridge toward you out of its slot to remove it.
      caution:
    Do not remove multiple cartridges at the same time. Remove and then reinstall each cartridge one at a time. Do not leave a cartridge outside the product for more than 30 minutes.

  6. Lightly moisten the swab or cloth, and then squeeze out the excess moisture.
  7. Hold the cartridge by its handle, and then wipe the copper contacts.

  8. Slide the cartridge back into the empty slot.

  9. To secure the cartridge, press down on the latch until it clicks into place.

  10. Repeat 4 through 9 for each cartridge.
  11. Close the cartridge access door.
Step two: Align the All-in-One
Print another alignment page.
  • If the alignment page printed correctly, stop troubleshooting.
  • If the alignment fails or the alignment page does not print correctly, continue to the next step.
Solution five: Reset and align the All-in-One
Follow these steps to reset and align the All-in-One.
Step one: Reset the All-in-One
  1. Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
      note:
    The product might not turn off after pressing the Power button. Continue to the next step regardless.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.
  4. Wait 30 seconds.
  5. Plug the power cord into the electrical outlet.
  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  7. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Step two: Align the All-in-One
Print one more alignment page.
  • If the alignment page printed correctly, stop troubleshooting.
  • If the alignment fails or the alignment page does not print correctly, continue to the next step.
Service or replace your HP product if you completed all preceding steps.
