An 'Incorrect Print Cartridge' or 'Insert Print Cartridge in...Stall' Message Displays on the Computer in Windows After Installing a Print Cartridge in an HP Officejet 7200, 7300, or 7400 All-in-One Series Printer

Issue
After installing a cartridge, the error message Incorrect Print Cartridge or Insert [Black or Photo / Tri-color] print cartridge in [right / left] stall appears on the computer.
  note:
The message appears on the computer only if the product software is installed on the computer.
Solution
Follow these steps to resolve the error message on the computer.
Step one: Remove, inspect, and reseat the cartridge
The cartridge might not have full electrical contact with the product. Removing and reinstalling the cartridge might help.
  note:
HP cannot guarantee the quality of remanufactured or refilled cartridges. Use genuine HP cartridges to ensure good quality.
  1. Make sure that the product is turned on.
      note:
Press the power button () to turn on the product.
  2. Open the product cover and wait until the carriage is idle and silent.
  3. Open the cartridge latch.
    1. Press down lightly on top of the latch.
    2. Pull out the bottom of the latch to unhook it.

        caution:
Do not try to remove the copper electrical strip.
    3. Look at the number on the cartridge label and make sure it is compatible with the product. Compatible cartridges are listed in the product user guide.
  5. If the cartridge is not compatible, obtain the correct cartridge, and then go to "Step five: Replace the cartridge." If the cartridge is compatible, reinstall it in the product:
    1. Hold the cartridge with the nozzles down and the copper electrical contacts facing the product, and then slide the cartridge into the carriage.
      • Cartridges marked with a triangle go into the left carriage slot.
      • Cartridges marked with a square or pentagon go into the right carriage slot.

  6. Close the product cover.
If the issue continues, proceed to the next step.
Step two: Clean the cartridge and carriage contacts
  1. The following items are required to clean the cartridge and carriage contacts.
    • Clean distilled water. Use bottled or filtered water if distilled water is not available. Tap water might contain contaminants which could damage the cartridge.
    • Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that will not stick to the cartridges (coffee filters work well).
    • Sheets of paper or a paper towel to rest the cartridges on during cleaning.
  2. Open the product cover and wait until the carriage stops moving.
  3. Remove the cartridge and place it on a piece of paper with the nozzle plate facing up.
      note:
Clean the electrical contacts quickly. The cartridge should not be outside the product for more than 30 minutes. If the cartridge is outside the product for too long, the ink can dry and clog the nozzles.
  4. Disconnect the power cord from the product.
  5. Dip a cotton swab in the clean distilled water and squeeze it to remove most of the moisture. The swab should be only slightly damp.
  6. Clean the cartridge contacts.
      caution:
    Do not touch the nozzles.

  8. Let the cartridge sit for eight to ten minutes to allow the cleaned area to dry, or use a new cotton swab to dry it.
  9. Reinstall the cartridge.
  10. Close the product cover and reconnect the power cord to the product.
  11. Print a document.
If the issue continues, proceed to the next step.
Step three: Repeat reseating and cleaning steps
Repeat "Step one: Remove, inspect, and reseat the cartridge" and "Step two: Clean the cartridge and carriage contacts."
If the issue continues, proceed to the next step.
Step four: Determine if the carriage chute is damaged
Follow these steps to determine if the carriage chute is broken. The carriage chute is the side wall of the carriage that holds a curved metal piece, called the x-bias spring.

  2. X-bias spring
  1. Open the product cover and wait until the carriage is idle and silent.
  2. Remove the cartridge.
  3. Looking in through either the cartridge access door or the output paper tray, look for a small plastic tab or the x-bias spring around the carriage area. The x-bias spring might be dislodged or missing if the small plastic tab in the carriage chute is broken. The broken tab might be in either one of the carriage chutes.
Figure : Dislodged spring in left chute

  4. Determine the status of the carriage chute.
    • If the carriage chute is broken, close the product cover and continue with "Step six: Service the product."
    • If the carriage chute is not broken and the x-bias spring is not dislodged, proceed to "Step five: Replace the cartridge."
Step five: Replace the cartridge
Replace the old cartridge with a new cartridge.
  note:
If there is no replacement cartridge, try printing in the ink backup mode. Remove the cartridge and print with the remaining cartridges.
  1. Lift the cartridge latch inside the product.
To replace the tri-color cartridge, lift the green latch to the left.
To replace the black, photo, or gray photo cartridge, lift the black latch to the right.
