Description

Computers with Samsung PM9A1 NVME drives may have run time bad blocks (RTBB), exhibit SMART errors causing the drive to get into a Read Only state. If this occurs, the drive cannot to boot into the Operating System, or show up as a data drive. This issue occurs If the firmware version on the drive is HPS2 (or earlier).

Resolution

This issue occurs because of the specific firmware version installed on the PM9A1 drives. Perform the steps provided below to confirm what firmware version is installed on the PM9A1 drive.

If the issue has occurred and the firmware update cannot be installed, contact HP for further assistance.

To prevent this issue from occurring, perform the following steps update firmware from HPS2 to HPS3.

  1. Power on the computer.

  2. Press F2 repeatidly to enter the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.

  3. Select System Information.

  4. Select Storage, then check the firmware of the drive.

  5. Save settings, then exit the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.

If your PM9A1 firmware version is HPS3, there are no steps to be taken as this firmware version is not impacted.

If the firmware version is HPS2, refer to the following SoftPaq to install the following Samsung SSD Firmware Update.
