HP PCs - Using Secure Erase or HP Disk Sanitizer

Secure Erase and HP Disk Sanitizer are tools used to permanently remove data from a hard drive or solid-state drive. The deleted information cannot be recovered.

  • Secure Erase: Works on solid-state drives and hard drives.

  • HP Disk Sanitizer: Works only on hard drives. It permanently deletes data from the hard drive and is not available for solid-state drives.

When to use Secure Erase or HP Disk Sanitizer

Use these tools in the following scenarios.

CAUTION:

Before beginning, back up your local data. The deleted information cannot be recovered. For more information about backing up your data, see HP PCs - Back up your files (Windows 11, 10).

  • HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI cannot find an error on the hard drive after it displayed an error during operating system installation.

  • You want to permanently remove or delete all data from your hard drive or solid-state drive.

Use Secure Erase or HP Disk Sanitizer

Use Secure Erase or HP Disk Sanitizer depending on whether you have a hard drive or solid-state drive. You can access both tools through the BIOS.

  1. Disconnect any external storage devices.

  2. Turn on or restart the computer.

  3. While the display is blank, press the f10 key repeatedly to enter the BIOS settings menu.

    On some computers, you might need to press f2 or f6.

  4. Click Security.

  5. Click Hard Drive Utilities or Hard Drive Tools.

  6. Select Secure Erase or Disk Sanitizer to open the tool.

  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to destroy your data.
