HP Printers - How Do I Find My Model or Printer Number?

This document is for HP Inkjet and LaserJet printers.
HP has released hundreds of different printer models. Knowing the identification of an HP printer can help you find support information easier and is necessary when ordering replacement cartridges.
There are at least four types of numbers for HP printer identification:
  • Series number: A group of similar printer models. For example, an OfficeJet Pro 8720 Printer series contains the 8720, 8725, and 8728 printer models.
  • Model number: This is the number in a printer’s brand name that makes it unique within a series of printers. Many printer models have the same base features of printing, scanning, and copying, however, some have letters at the end of the model number which indicate additional features. For example, the HP LaserJet Pro M125a printers have printing, copying, scanning features, and use a USB connection, the HP LaserJet Pro M125nw printers have printing, copying, scanning features, and have wireless and wired network connectivity functions.
  • Product number: In some cases, it is necessary for HP to use an additional number to provide a separate identity for a printer model, such as when selling a model into a special sales channel. The product number represents a collection of printers of the same model. For example, the HP OfficeJet Mobile 250 printers consist of the 250, 250c, 252, 252c, and the 258. The HP OfficeJet Mobile 258 is only sold in China.
  • Serial number: A unique number that represents one printer. Every printer that HP releases has its own unique serial number. To learn more about serial numbers, go to Finding the Serial Number.
Use one of the following methods to find your HP printer's model number, product number, or serial number.
