HP MFP Digital Sending Software 4.25 - Diagonal dot pattern displayed in black & white PDF OCR documents

Issue:

With some scanned source images, a diagonal dot pattern may be visible in the background of black and white searchable PDF OCR documents as shown in Figure 1.
Figure : Diagonal dot pattern
In addition to the visual defect, this issue will also result in larger destination file sizes as the dots are stored in the file.
Solution

There is currently no way to remove this dot pattern or prevent it from occurring with newly scanned black and white OCR PDFs. Since many customers have chosen black-and-white simply for the reduced file size as compared to color, HP recommends the use of a high-compression color destination file as an alternative.
With the release of DSS 4.25.42, a new configuration entry PDF OCR Compression is supported to offer a higher level of image file-size compression to color searchable PDF OCR jobs.
To enable: Add PDF OCR Compression=1 to the [General] section of the hpbs2e.ini file located in the DSS installation directory [usually under the C:\Program Files… or C:\Program Files (x86)\Hewlett-Packard\HP MFP Digital Sending Software directory]. Restart the HP Digital Sending Software service.
To disable: Remove the entry or set to PDF OCR Compression=0. Restart the HP Digital Sending Software service.
Default: This entry does not exist by default.
With color searchable PDF OCR jobs, the image file will generally be much smaller with only minimal loss of quality. Enabling this feature will force black and white requested searchable PDF OCR jobs to also produce a highly compressed color image when scanned from most devices. The loss of ability to create black and white searchable PDFs in favor of highly compressed color searchable PDFs should be understood before making this change.
Cause

This issue occurs in the file compression algorithm utilized by the OCR software. It is not an issue with the HP scanner hardware or firmware which delivers a clean image to DSS. The OCR accuracy is not adversely affected by this dot-pattern since it is performed on the original clean source image. The dot-pattern is only introduced when creating the background image for the searchable PDF and only for the black-and-white jobs. HP is working with the OCR software vendor to resolve this issue in a future release of DSS.
