HP Z420 Workstation - Removing and Replacing the Access Panel

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the access panel for the HP Z420 Workstation.
Minimum skill level
The end user requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The end user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the access panel that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return", then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

  note:
For customers in countries/regions with RoHS legislation (e.g. EU, China, etc.) restricting the use of hazardous substances in electrical equipment. The use of the "Original" spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Modified" spare number, the "Modified" spare part must be ordered as the replacement part. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Original" spare number, please order the "Original" spare number as the replacement part. In this case, either the "Original" or the "Modified" spare number may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.
Summary of instructions
To view a video demonstrating the procedure for removing the access panel, click here to view the HP Services Media Library and then click on Remove/Replace videos. On the new window, select Access panel from the menu on the upper left hand side of the screen.
Access panel removal
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to the product or loss of data.
      note:
    If a solenoid hood lock is installed, unlock it using the Smart Cover menu in the F10 Setup Security menu. End user must know the F10 Setup password to enable the lock. If the end user does not know the password, override it by pressing the CMOS button on the system board for 3 to 5 seconds. Then use F10 Setup to set a new password and enable the solenoid hood lock.
      caution:
    In addition to clearing the Setup password, pushing the CMOS button will reset CMOS values to factory defaults and will erase any customized information including asset numbers and special settings.
      note:
    If the end user has not unlocked the solenoid hood lock using the F10 Setup Security menu, a FailSafe key (special star-shaped screwdriver bit) will be needed to remove the screws that secure the solenoid hood lock to the chassis. End user will need the FailSafe Key in case of forgotten password, power loss, or workstation malfunction. To obtain a FailSafe key, contact an authorized HP reseller or service provider and order part number 166527-001 (wrench-type key) or part number 166527-002 (screwdriver bit key).
  2. Pull out and hold the access panel release latch.
  3. Lift the panel away from the chassis.
Access panel replacement
  1. Slide the lip on the front edge of the access panel under the front chassis guide rail.
  2. Lower the back end of the access panel onto the chassis.
  3. Press down until it locks in place.
      note:
    To relock the solenoid hood lock, use the Smart Cover menu in the F10 Setup Security menu.
