HP EliteBook 8460p Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Optical Drive

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the optical drive for the HP EliteBook 8460p Notebook PC.
Minimum skill level
The End User requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.
Tools required
Small, Phillips-head (P1) screwdrivers

The replacement part number will vary depending on the optical drive that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

  note:

The use of the Original Spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If your unit contains a part that is labelled with the Modified Spare number, the Modified Spare must be ordered as the replacement part. If your unit contains a part that is labelled with the Original Spare number, please order the Original Spare as the replacement part. In this case either the Original Spare or the Modified Spare may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

Optical drive removal
  note:
The above mentioned video depicts a specific configuration of the notebook. The same removal and replacement procedures apply to all configurations of the notebook.
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    • Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
    • Observe all precautions when removing and replacing components.
  2. On the bottom of the notebook, slide the battery release latch (identified with a battery icon) to the release position.
  3. Slide the battery out of the battery bay.
  4. On the bottom of the notebook, slide the bottom cover release latch (identified with a bottom cover icon) to the release position to partially eject the bottom cover.
  5. Lift the bottom cover out of the accessory bay and remove.
  6. Loosen the captive P1 Phillips-head screw (identified with an optical drive lock icon) that secures the optical drive to the notebook.
  7. Using a small, non-metallic tool, press on the metal tab (identified with an optical drive eject icon) on the rear edge of optical drive to free the optical drive from its connector on the system board.
  8. Remove the optical drive from the optical drive bay.
Optical drive replacement
  1. Insert the optical drive into the optical drive bay until the tray door bezel is flush with the side of the base enclosure.
  2. Tighten the captive P1 Phillips-head screw (identified with an optical drive lock icon) that secures the optical drive to the notebook.
  3. Align the edges of the bottom cover with the edges of the accessory bay and place the bottom cover into position.
  4. Slide the bottom cover toward the rear of the notebook until it is properly seated and the bottom cover release latch clicks.
  5. Slide the bottom cover release latch to the locked position to secure the bottom cover in the accessory bay.
  6. Slide the battery into the battery bay until it is properly seated and the battery release latch clicks.
  7. Slide the battery release latch to the locked position to secure the battery in the battery bay.
      caution:
    Any red visible under the bottom cover and battery release latches indicate that the bottom cover is not securely locked in the accessory bay. This may allow the bottom cover and the battery to slide out inadvertently.
