HP 620 Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Hard Disk Drive

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the hard disk drive for the HP 620 notebook PC.
Minimum skill level
The End user requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.
Tools required
Small, Phillips-head (P1) screwdrivers.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the hard disk drive that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

In this case either the Original Spare or the Modified Spare may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

Hard disk drive removal
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2. Remove the two 3 mm P1 Phillips-head screws from the right side of the hard disk drive bracket.
  3. Loosen the captive P1 Phillips-head screw on the left side of the hard disk drive bracket.
  4. Use the black Mylar tab located on the hard disk drive enclosure to slide the hard disk drive away from the hard disk drive connector on the system board.
  5. Remove the hard disk drive from the hard disk drive bay.
  6. Place the hard disk drive in a static dissipative bag.
Hard disk drive replacement
  1. Remove the hard disk drive from the static dissipative bag.
  2. Place the hard disk drive into the hard disk drive bay and align it with the hard disk drive connector on the system board.
  3. Use the black Mylar tab located on the hard disk drive enclosure to slide the hard disk drive securely onto the hard disk drive connector.
      caution:
    Ensure that the wireless antenna cables are free from being pinched between the hard disk drive and base enclosure.
  4. Tighten the captive P1 Phillips-head screw on the right side of the hard disk drive bracket.
  5. Replace the two 3 mm P1 Phillips-head screws on the left side of the hard disk drive bracket.
