HP Photosmart, Deskjet, and Officejet Printers - 'Unable to retrieve network settings from device' Message Displays on the Computer When Printing from a Second Attached Product in Windows XP and Windows Vista

Issue
When you try to print from the second of two products attached to the same networked computer, the 'Unable to retrieve network settings from device' message displays on the computer.
Solution
No solution exists for this issue at this time. Use the steps in the 'Workaround' section to work around this issue.
Workaround
Follow these steps to work around the issue.
Step one: Turn off the primary printer
Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
Step two: Reboot the computer
Reboot the computer:
  • Windows XP: Click Start, select Shut Down, select Restart from the drop-down list, and then click OK.
  • Windows Vista: On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon (), click the arrow () next to the Lock button (), and then click Restart.
Cause
When two or more products attach to a networked computer, only one of the products installed can access the network toolbox or network settings in the print toolbox.
