This document pertains to HP computers with Windows 7.

This document provides a, secure process to follow after you use System Recovery to restore the computer to its original configuration. During this critical time when the computer is being set up, it is more vulnerable to security threats because it does not contain the most recent updates. Use the following steps to make sure your computer is up-to-date and secure.

Step 1: Connecting the hardware and completing setup after Windows 7 System Recovery

When setting up your computer after a system recovery, connect only the basic hardware you need to use Windows. These are usually the mouse, keyboard, and monitor. Make sure that the network cable and any wireless connections are disconnected.

caution:

A newly recovered computer has no security protection. Do not connect the network cable, printers, cameras, scanners, or any other non-essential peripheral devices and do not install any extra software until setup has finished and you have completed each step in this document. Remove USB storage devices and HP Personal and Pocket Media drives from their sockets during the setup process.

If the computer uses a broadband Internet connection, do not connect the network cable (or broadband modem). The computer may be more susceptible to security threats during this critical period. If you need an Internet connection to complete a setup screen, try to bypass the screen and complete that portion of setup later. If this is not possible, temporarily connect the cable to complete the screen. Make sure to scan the computer for viruses immediately after completing the rest of these steps.

You must complete a series of computer setup screens before you can complete the setup process. It is important to fill out the setup information and wait for setup to complete. It might take more than 40 minutes before the Windows desktop displays. Do not restart the computer during this process. If the computer restarts, you might need to perform a system recovery before you can use Windows.

Step 2: Setting up a firewall after Windows 7 System Recovery

When setting up your computer after a system recovery, setting up a firewall will provide basic protection against security threats. Be sure to install the firewall before attempting to connect to the Internet. You can use Windows Firewall or other firewall software, such as Norton Internet Security.

note:

Do not enable more than one firewall. Firewall software programs can interfere with one another if more than one is open.

Use the information in the following section to help you set up a firewall:

Click Start , click Control Panel, and then click System and Security.

Click Action Center.

If no firewall is enabled, an alert displays under Security.

If the alert displays, click View firewall options to choose a firewall to enable.

Click Security to expand this section and verify that a firewall is enabled.

Check the status next to Network firewall. If the firewall is off, click View installed firewall programs to enable a firewall.

Step 3: Connecting to the Internet after Windows 7 System Recovery

When setting up your computer after a system recovery, enable a firewall before you connect to the Internet. After your firewall is in place, you can set up an Internet connection using information from your Internet Service Provider (ISP). If necessary, contact the ISP support number if you are having trouble setting up the connection or if you are missing important information such as passwords.

Do not browse the Internet or use e-mail yet! Finish the steps in this document to make the computer more secure before using the Internet.

After establishing an Internet connection, continue to the next step.

Step 4: Installing security software after Windows 7 System Recovery

When setting up your computer after a system recovery, after you set up a firewall and connect to the Internet, install a security or antivirus program to protect the computer against security threats such as viruses and spyware. Your computer may have come with a trial subscription to Norton Internet Security. If so, you can use this program.

Step 5: Updating security software after Windows 7 System Recovery

Make sure your security software is up to date with the newest virus definitions and threat information.

Use the information in the following section to help you set up security software:

Example steps for setting security software in Windows 7

For example, if you are using Norton Internet Security, do the following:

Click Start , then click All Programs. Click Norton Internet Security, and then click Norton Internet Security again.
Under Computer, click Run LiveUpdate.

Next to Computer, click Settings.

In the drop-down list next to Idle Time Scan, select Weekly.

After updating security software, continue to the next step.

Step 6: Downloading updates for Windows after Windows 7 System Recovery

Make sure Windows 7 is up to date with the latest critical updates from Microsoft.

Click Start

, click All Programs, and then click Windows Update.

Follow the instructions to download and install all critical updates from Microsoft.

After installing all critical updates, enable Automatic Update (for Windows Updates) using the following instructions:

Click Start , click All Programs, and then click Windows Update.
Under Windows Update, click Turn automatic updating on or off.

Under Important updates, select Install updates automatically (recommended) from the drop-down list.

Choose an update frequency and a time to install updates.
Click OK.

After Window Update is set to automatically update, continue to the next step.

Step 7: Updating software and drivers from HP after Windows 7 System Recovery

Use HP Update to install all critical software and driver updates from HP:

Click Start , click All Programs, HP, and then click HP Update.

Click Next and follow the on-screen instructions to download and install updates.

The computer is now more secure with the latest updates installed. Now you can install hardware devices, such as printers, all-in-ones, and cameras, using the manufacturer's installation instructions. Make sure a device is completely installed and working before installing another one. You can also install software that did not install automatically.
