Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the Video heat sink/fan assembly for the HP Compaq nw8440 Mobile Workstation.
Tools required

The replacement part number will vary depending on the Video heat sink/fan assembly that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

Video heat sink/fan assembly removal
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2. Disconnect the fan cable from the system board.
  3. Loosen the two captive P0 Phillips-head screws, labeled 1 and 2 on the video heat sink, that secure the video heat sink/fan assembly to the thermal plate.
  4. Loosen the two captive P0 Phillips-head screws, labeled 3 and 4 on the fan, that secure the video heat sink/fan assembly to the base enclosure.
  5. Lift the inside edge of the video heat sink/fan assembly and slide it out of the base enclosure.
Video heat sink/fan assembly replacement
  note:
Before replacing the video heat sink/fan assembly, the thermal grease should be replaced. The thermal grease should be replaced every time the video heat sink/fan assembly is removed.
  1. Toe the outside edge of the video heat sink/fan assembly into the base enclosure.
  2. Lower the inside edge of the video heat sink/fan assembly into position.
  3. Tighten the two captive P0 Phillips-head screws, labeled 1 and 2 on the video heat sink, that secure the video heat sink/fan assembly to the thermal plate.
  4. Tighten the two captive P0 Phillips-head screws, labeled 3 and 4 on the fan, that secure the video heat sink/fan assembly to the base enclosure.
  5. Reconnect the fan cable to the system board.
