Learn about the print tasks that are available when printing from a software program in macOS.
The sections below contain instructions on how to change print settings in the print driver when sending a print job to the printer. Many settings can also be changed from the printer control panel.
Not all features apply to all printers. Please check the printer user guide for specific features that are available on the printer.
Follow these steps to print from a software program in macOS.
Click the File menu, and then click the Print option.
In the Printer menu, select the printer.
Open the menu's drop-down list, or click Show Details, and then select other menus to adjust the print settings.
Click the Print button.
Follow these steps to select a printing preset to apply saved print settings to the current print job.
Click the File menu, and then click the Print option.
In the Printer menu, select the printer.
In the Presets menu, select the printing preset.
Click the Print button.
Create a printing preset to save the current print settings for reuse.
Click the File menu, and then click the Print option.
In the Printer menu, select the printer.
Open the menu's drop-down list, or click Show Details, and then select other menus to adjust the print settings.
For each menu, select the print settings that you want to save for reuse.
In the Presets menu, click the Save Current Settings as Preset option, and then enter a name for the preset.
Click the OK button to save the preset.
For printer models that have an automatic duplexer installed, follow these steps to automatically print on both sides.
If the printer does not have an automatic duplexer installed, or to print on paper types that the duplexer does not support, skip to the next section for instructions on how to manually print on both sides.
This feature is available if you install the HP print driver. It might not be available if you are using AirPrint.
Click the File menu, and then click the Print option.
In the Printer menu, select the printer.
Open the menu's drop-down list, or click Show Details, and then click the Layout menu.
From the Two-Sided drop-down list, select a binding option.
Click the Print button.
For printers that do not have an automatic duplexer installed, or to print on paper that is not supported by the automatic duplexer, follow these steps to manually print on both sides.
This feature is available if you install the HP print driver. It might not be available if you are using AirPrint.
Click the File menu, and then click the Print option.
In the Printer menu, select the printer.
Open the menu's drop-down list, or click Show Details, and then click the Manual Duplex menu.
Click the box next to Manual Duplex, and then select a binding option.
Click the Print button.
Remove any blank paper that is in Tray 1 on the printer.
Retrieve the printed stack from the output bin and place it with the printed-side facing down in the input tray.
If prompted, touch the appropriate control panel button to continue.
Follow these steps to print multiple pages onto one sheet of paper.
Click the File menu, and then click the Print option.
In the Printer menu, select the printer.
Open the menu's drop-down list, or click Show Details, and then click the Layout menu.
From the Pages per Sheet drop-down list, select the number of pages that you want to print on each sheet.
In the Layout Direction area, select the order and placement of the pages on the sheet.
From the Borders menu, select the type of border to print around each page on the sheet.
Click the Print button.
Follow these steps to select the type of paper that is being used for the print job.
Click the File menu, and then click the Print option.
In the Printer menu, select the printer.
Open the menu's drop-down list, or click Show Details, and then click the Media & Quality menu or the Paper/Quality menu.
From the Media-type drop-down list, select the paper type.
Click the Print button.
Follow these steps to configure a tray to match the print settings in the print driver.
In the software program, specify the source tray, the paper size, and the paper type.
Send the job to the printer.
If the tray needs to be configured, a tray configuration message displays on the printer control panel.
Load the tray with the specified type and size of paper, and then close the tray.
Select OK on the printer control panel to accept the detected size and type, or select Modify to choose a different paper size or type.
Once you have selected the correct paper size and type, select OK or Done to confirm.
Follow these steps to select the page orientation for the print job.
The method to set the page orientation varies depending on the application that you are printing from.
From the application, click the File menu.
If a Page Setup option is listed, click it, and then select the page orientation.
If a Page Setup option is not listed in the File menu, click the Print option.
In the Printer menu, select the printer.
If the page orientation settings are on the main print screen, select the page orientation.
If the page orientation settings are not on the main print screen, click the Page Setup button, and then select the page orientation.
Click OK to save the setting.
Follow these steps to add a cover page to the print job.
Click the File menu, and then click the Print option.
In the Printer menu, select the printer.
By default, the print driver displays the Copies & Pages menu.
Open the menu's drop-down list, and then click the Cover Page menu.
Select when to print the cover page; click either the Before Document button, or the After Document button.
In the Cover Page Type menu, select the message that you want to print on the cover page.
To print a blank cover page, select the Standard option from the Cover Page Type menu.
Click the Print button.
Follow these steps to scale a document to fit the size of the page that is being printed.
Click the File menu, and then click the Print option.
In the Printer menu, select the printer.
Open the menu's drop-down list, or click Show Details, and then click the Paper Handling menu.
In the Destination Paper Size area, click the box next to Scale to fit paper size, and then select the size from the drop-down list.
Click the Print button.
Follow these steps to print the pages of your document in a booklet format.
Click the File menu, and then click the Print option.
In the Printer menu, select the printer.
Open the menu's drop-down list, or click Show Details, and then click the Layout menu.
From the Two-Sided drop-down list, select a binding option.
Open the menu's drop-down list, and then click the Booklet Printing menu.
Click the box next to Format Output as Booklet, and then select a binding option.
Select the paper size.
Click the Print button.
Follow these steps to select the staple options for the print job.
Click the File menu, and then click the Print option.
In the Printer menu, select the printer.
Open the menu's drop-down list, or click Show Details, and then click the Finishing menu.
From the Staple drop-down list, select a staple option.
Click the Print button.
