This document provides the procedure to replace the image-transfer maintenance kit.

Before performing service

Turn the printer power off

  • Disconnect the power cable.

    Warning:

    To avoid damage to the printer, turn the printer off, wait 30 seconds, and then remove the power cord before attempting to service the printer.

Note:

Do not move the transfer unit to another product after installing it in this one.

No special tools are required to install this part.

After performing service

Turn the printer power on

  • Connect the power cable.

  • Use the power switch to turn the power on.

Post service test

Print a configuration page to make sure that the printer is functioning correctly.

Remove the roller cover

Follow these steps to remove the roller cover.

  1. Open Tray 1.

  2. Push firmly on the top edge of the roller cover to release the tabs.

  3. Open the right door.

Follow these steps to remove the roller.

  1. Spread apart the blue tabs on each side of the roller.

  2. Rotate the roller out of the product.

Follow these steps to install the roller.

  1. Remove the new roller from the packaging.

    CAUTION:

    Do not touch the surface of the roller.

  2. Align the tabs on the roller with the slots in the product.

  3. Push down on the roller to snap it into place.

Follow these steps to install the roller cover.

  2. Push down on the roller cover until it snaps into place.

Remove the transfer unit

Follow these steps to remove the transfer unit.

  1. Push down on the blue lever at the left side of the secondary transfer assembly to release it and gain access to the transfer unit.

  2. Grasp the blue handles on each side of the transfer unit.

  3. Gently pull the transfer unit part way out of the product.

  4. When the transfer unit is part way out, larger blue handles fold out on each side. Grasp these handles and then pull the transfer unit out of the product.

Unpack the replacement assembly

Follow these steps to unpack the replacement assembly.

  1. Dispose of the defective part.

    Note:

    HP recommends responsible disposal of the defective part.

  2. Unpack the replacement part from the packaging.

    CAUTION:

    Some parts are sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD). Always perform service work at an ESD-protected workstation or mat. If an ESD workstation or mat is not available, touch the sheet-metal chassis to provide a static ground before touching an ESD-sensitive assembly. Protect the ESD-sensitive assemblies by placing them in ESD pouches when they are out of the printer.

    Important:

    Make sure that all of the shipping materials (for example shipping tape) are removed from the replacement part prior to installation.

    Note:

    If the replacement part is a roller or pad, avoid touching the spongy part of it. Skin oils on the roller or pad can cause paper pickup and/or print-quality problems. HP recommends using disposable gloves when handling rollers or pads or washing your hands before touching rollers or pads.

  3. To install an assembly, reverse the removal steps.

    Note:

    When applicable, special installation instructions are provided for an assembly at the end of the removal procedure. Always completely read the removal instructions and follow all special installation instructions.

Install the transfer unit

Follow these steps to install the transfer unit.

  1. Grasp the large blue handles on each side of the transfer unit, and insert it into the product.

  2. When the transfer unit is part way installed, grasp the two smaller blue handles at the front and push it into place.

Remove the secondary transfer roller

Follow these steps to remove the secondary transfer roller.

  1. Locate the secondary transfer roller at the front of the transfer assembly.

  2. Lift up on each end of the secondary transfer roller, and remove it.

Install the secondary transfer roller

Follow these steps to install the secondary transfer roller.

  1. Insert each end of the secondary transfer roller into the product.

  2. Pull the orange tab and peel the protective paper from the roller.

    CAUTION:

    Do not touch the black, spongy surface of the roller. Fingerprints can cause print-quality problems.

Remove the cassette tray rollers

Follow these steps to remove the cassette tray rollers.

  1. Open and remove each of the cassette trays (Trays 2-5).

    Note:

    Some products have different tray configurations than shown here.

  2. Locate the set of three rollers inside the cavity for each tray. Replace only the rollers that have blue plastic on the ends.

  3. For each roller that has blue plastic on the end, pinch together the tabs, and pull the roller straight out.

  1. Insert the new rollers, and push in until each roller snaps into place.
