HP LaserJet Pro MFP M201, M202 Printers - Setting Up the Printer Hardware

This document is for HP LaserJet Pro MFP M201 and M202 printers.
Complete the steps in this document to set up the printer hardware before you install the printer software on the computer.

Hardware setup steps

Use these steps to unpack and set up your printer.

Step 1: Unpack the printer

Remove the printer from the box, and then remove all packing materials from the printer.
  1. Remove all tape and packing materials from the outside of the printer.

  2. Lift the cartridge access door.

  3. Remove the protective foam from the cartridge access area and set it aside for recycling.

  4. Remove the print cartridge, and then set it aside in a secure place.

  5. Carefully remove the packing materials from inside the printer.

  6. Grasp both sides of the print cartridge, and then gently rock the cartridge back and forth to distribute the toner.

  7. Remove the orange clip from the print cartridge.

  8. Pull out the orange tab to remove the sealing tape from the print cartridge.

  9. Align the print cartridge with the tracks inside the printer, and then insert the print cartridge until it is firmly seated.

  10. Close the top cover, and then close the scanner assembly.
  11. Recycle the packing materials.

  12. Attach the output tray extender and the main input tray (Tray 2) to the printer.

Step 2: Check the contents of the box

The contents might vary by country/region. See the packaging for a list of items shipped in the box.

Step 3: Load paper in the main paper tray

Load the main paper tray with plain white paper, and then install the priority input tray (Tray 1).
note:
To purchase paper, go to HP Home & Home Office.
  1. Slide the paper width and paper length guides to their outermost positions.

  2. Insert plain white paper into Tray 2.

  3. Slide in the paper width and paper length guides until they rest against the edges of the paper.
    note:
    Do not slide in the paper guides so far that they bind the paper.

  4. Place Tray 1 on top of Tray 2.

  5. Slide out the paper width guides in Tray 1.
  6. Load plain white paper in Tray 1.

Step 4: Connect the power cord, and then turn on the printer

  1. Connect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then plug the power cord directly into an electrical outlet.

  2. Press the Power button to turn on the printer. The printer initializes and then calibrates itself. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
      caution:
    Do not connect a USB cable now. The printer prompts you to connect the USB cable at the correct time during the software installation.

Step 5: Select the language

After the printer finishes calibrating, the language selection menu displays. Follow these steps to select the language displayed on the printer control panel.
During the initialization process, the Language menu displays.
  1. Press the Right arrow until your preferred language displays, press OK, and then press OK again to confirm the selection.
  2. Press the Right arrow until your preferred country/region displays, press OK, and then press OK again to confirm the selection.
  3. Press the Right arrow to select Self-managed or IT-managed, and then press OK.
