HP Z620 Workstation - Removing and Replacing Media Card Reader

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the media card reader for the HP Z620 Workstation.
Minimum skill level
The End User requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the media card reader that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

  note:
For customers in countries/regions with RoHS legislation (e.g. EU, China, etc.) restricting the use of hazardous substances in electrical equipment. The use of the "Original" spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Modified" spare number, the "Modified" spare part must be ordered as the replacement part. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Original" spare number, please order the "Original" spare number as the replacement part. In this case, either the "Original" or the "Modified" spare number may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

To view a video demonstrating the procedure for removing the media card reader, click here to view the HP Services Media Library and then click on Remove/Replace videos. On the new window, select Media card reader from the menu on the upper left hand side of the screen.
Media card reader removal
  note:
This video was developed using a pre-production version of the workstation. The chassis and parts shown might not exactly match the current production version, but the part removal and replacement steps are the same.
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to the product or loss of data.
  2. Disconnect the media card reader cable from the system board.
  3. Pull out on the release latch and slide the drive carrier out of the drive cage.
  4. Press the green release latch on the drive carrier and slide the media card reader back about an inch.
  5. Lift the media card reader up and out of the drive carrier.
      note:
    If the replacement media card reader does not include guide screws, remove and reuse the screws from this drive.
Media card reader replacement
  1. Place the media card reader into the drive carrier.
  2. Push the media card reader into the drive carrier until it locks into place.
  3. Push the drive carrier into the drive bay until it stops.
  4. Lift the release latch and slide the drive carrier forward about half an inch.
  5. Release the latch and continue pushing the drive carrier until it locks into place.
  6. Connect the media card reader cable to the system board.
