HP Z420 Workstation - Removing and Replacing the Internal USB Adapter
Minimum skill level
The end user requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The end user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the internal USB adapter that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return", then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

The use of the "Original" spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Modified" spare number, the "Modified" spare part must be ordered as the replacement part. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Original" spare number, please order the "Original" spare number as the replacement part. In this case, either the "Original" or the "Modified" spare number may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

Remove the access panel. Click here to view how to remove the access panel.

Remove the PCIe card. Click here to view how to remove the PCIe card.

Disconnect any USB device connected to the internal USB cable.

Disconnect the internal USB cable from the system board and remove it from the chassis.
Internal USB adapter replacement

Connect the internal USB cable to a 1x5 or 2x5 header on the system board.
note:
Match the blank pin position on the header with the blank pin position on the internal USB cable connector. When connecting to a 2 x 5 header, connect the cable to the keyed side only of the header containing pins 1, 3, 5, 7, and blank pin position 9. -
Connect the USB device to the internal USB cable.
