Blinking Lights on the HP Color LaserJet CP1215 and CP1217 Printers

Introduction

The lights on the product control panel indicate the product status. These lights can be on, off, or flashing, depending on the product status.
note:
In this document, "blinking" means the same as "flashing."

  1. Print cartridge lights

Blinking lights

The following sections describe the most common combinations of blinking lights. The sections explain the product status or the issue, and solutions to fix an issue.
note:
There might be more than one solution for blinking lights patterns that indicate an error. After you find the pattern that matches your blinking lights pattern, try each solution to resolve the issue.
In the following graphics, the small “burst” lines around a light indicate that the light is blinking.
Ready, Resume, and Attention lights blink one after the other
Status
This blinking light pattern indicates one of the following situations:
  • The product is going through the startup cycle after you turn on the product.
  • The product is returning to the Ready state after you cancel a print job.
Wait until the lights stop flashing before proceeding.
Ready light on

Status
The product is on and ready to print.

The product is processing or receiving data.
Wait until the Ready light stops blinking before proceeding.
Attention light blinking
Issue
This blinking light pattern indicates that a door is open.
Solution
  1. Open the front access door completely.

    note:
    Opening and closing the front access door completely makes sure that the toner drive mechanism works correctly after you close the door.
    • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
    • If the issue persists, continue to the next step.
  3. Open the rear door.

Attention light blinks and Resume light on

Issue
This blinking light pattern indicates a temporary or a continuable error.
Solution one: Press the Resume button
On the product control panel, press the Resume button ().
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting. The product processes the data and completes the print job.
  • If the recovery is unsuccessful, see the next solution.
Solution two: Reset the printer
  1. Press the Power switch to turn off the product.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Press the Power switch to turn on the product.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, see the next solution.
Solution three: Restore the product default settings
note:
Restoring the default settings unlocks menus that have been previously locked and resets all control panel menu items to the factory defaults. The restore does not reset the serial number and the page counts.
  1. Open Toolbox.
    • Windows XP: Click Start (), click All Programs, click HP, click your product, and then click HP Color LaserJet CP1210 Series Toolbox.
    • Windows Vista: Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, click your product, and then click HP Color LaserJet CP1210 Series Toolbox.
  2. Double-click the Status folder to open it, click Device Settings, click Service, and then click Restore in the rightmost pane.
    The product restores the default settings.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, see the next solution.
Solution four: Unplug the USB cable and reset the printer
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from the back of the product.
  2. Press the Power switch to turn off the product.
  3. Wait 30 seconds.
  4. Press the Power switch to turn on the product. Wait until the product is idle and silent before continuing.
  5. Reconnect the USB cable to the back of the product.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, see the next solution.
Solution five: Contact HP
If none of the above solutions resolves the issue, contact HP for steps on how to perform an NVRAM initialization.
Ready, Resume, and Attention lights on

Issue
This blinking light pattern indicates a fatal error.
Solution
Follow these steps to reset the product.
  1. Press the Power switch to turn off the product.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Press the Power switch to turn on the product.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, service the product.

Issue
The print cartridge indicated by the blinking light is either missing or out of toner. The following message might display on your computer: 'Cartridge Out Override In Use.'
Solution one: Make sure that all print cartridges are installed
  1. Open the front access door completely.

  2. Pull out the print cartridge drawer.

  3. Make sure that all the print cartridges are installed and secured in their color-coded slots.
  4. Close the front access door completely.

Solution two: Identify and replace any low or empty print cartridges
Follow these steps to identify and replace any low or empty print cartridges.
Step one: Identify any low or empty print cartridges
  1. On the product control panel, press and hold the Resume button () for three seconds. A Configuration and a Supplies Status page print.
  2. Check the Supplies Status page to identify any print cartridges that are low or out of toner.
Step two: Replace any low or empty cartridges
Follow the steps in the animation to replace a print cartridge. These steps are only basic instructions for installing a new print cartridge. If you prefer detailed steps, see step-by-step instructions on replacing a print cartridge (c01548609) (in English).
note:
The product shown in the following animation might look slightly different from your product, but the steps are the same.
Workaround
You can still print when a print cartridge is out of toner. However, print quality diminishes when a print cartridge is out of toner. Follow these steps to set the Cartridge out override feature.
  warning:
Using Cartridge out override can result in unsatisfactory print quality.
note:
When you select Cartridge out override, the print cartridge light stops flashing and stays lit until you replace the print cartridge.
  1. Open Toolbox.
    • Windows XP: Click Start (), click All Programs, click HP, click your product, and then click HP Color LaserJet CP1210 Series Toolbox.
    • Windows Vista: Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, click your product, and then click HP Color LaserJet CP1210 Series Toolbox.
  2. Click the Device Settings folder, and then click the System Setup page.
  3. Next to Cartridge out override, select On to turn on the override feature.
  4. Select Off to turn off the override feature later, if desired.
Paper jam light blinking

Issue
Paper is jammed in the product.

  caution:
Paper jams might result in loose toner on the page. If you get any toner on your clothes, wash them in cold water. Hot water permanently sets the toner into the fabric.
Do not use sharp objects, such as tweezers or needle-nose pliers, to remove jams. Damage caused by sharp objects is not covered by the warranty.
When you remove jammed paper, pull it straight out of the product. Pulling jammed paper out at an angle can damage the product.

  1. Remove all loose paper from tray 1 and the output tray.
  2. Clear the jam from the output tray
  3. Open and then close the rear door to clear the error light.
  4. Raise the jam access door, and then pull out tray 1.
  5. Remove any jammed paper from inside the tray 1 area.
  6. Reinstall tray 1, and then lower the jam access door.
  7. Press the Resume button () to continue printing.
  8. Open the rear door.
  9. Clear the jam from the fuser area.
  10. Close the rear door.

Issue
The product is out of paper.
Solution

The product does not feed paper.
Solution
The product cannot feed some types of paper. Follow these steps to load supported paper.
  1. Remove any paper from tray 1.
  2. Load supported paper.

  3. Press the Resume button () .
