HP Designjet 70 and 90 Series Printers - Media Loading and Handling

Introduction
This document contains instructions for loading and handling paper and other print media and includes tables that list supported paper and print media types.
Loading paper and print media
There are three ways to load sheets of paper into the printer:
  • Small input tray: Use the small input tray at the front of the printer for automatic feeding of normal sheets of paper between 76 x 142 mm (3 x 5.6 inches) and 330 x 483 mm (13 x 19 inches). Envelopes can also be loaded in this tray.
  • Front path: Use the front path for single-sheet feeding of paper between 110 x 205 mm (4.3 x 8.1 inches) and 457 x 1625 mm (18x 63.9 inches).
  • Rear path: Use the rear path for single-sheet feeding of thick paper or other media between 110 x 205 mm (4.3 x 8.1 inches) and 457 x 1625 mm (18 x 63.9 inches).
Use the input/output tray extensions to support large sheets of paper when printing with the front and rear input paths.

Using the small input tray
Use the small input tray to hold commonly used paper. The tray holds up to 100 sheets of paper. To use this tray, select Tray 1 in the software.
  note:
The tray must be extended for paper that is larger than Legal- or B4-size.
Complete the following steps to load the tray:
  1. Remove the small input tray.
    Figure : Removing the tray
  2. If the paper being used is larger than Legal- or B4-size, move the small blue tab to the left and pull the tray extension out as far as it will go.
    Figure : Extending the tray
  3. Place the paper in the tray, to the right and towards the printer, with the side to be printed on facing down .
Figure : Placing paper in the tray
  4. Push in the small blue tab on the right of the tray and the larger blue tab on the left of the tray until they fit snugly against the paper.
    Figure : Adjusting the tabs
  5. Insert the tray into the printer, pushing it in as far as it will go.
      note:
If the tray is extended, it will project out from the printer. The tray has two feet that must rest on the table.

Using the front path
Use the front path for paper and print media that requires special handling, and to print on the back of an already printed sheet. To use this path, select Single-Sheet Feed or Manual Feed in the software.
Complete the following steps to load the front path:
  1. If the paper being used is longer than the input/output tray, pull out the tray extensions.
Figure : Pulling out the tray extensions
  2. Place the paper in the input/output tray, aligning it on the right of the input/output tray, with the side to be printed on facing down.

  3. Push the paper into the printer as far as it will go, while maintaining its alignment to the right.

  4. Press OK on the front panel.
    Figure : OK button
The printer will check the alignment of the paper, and if it is misaligned it will eject the paper. If this happens, it will be necessary to reload the paper.
It is possible to press the OK button to load paper before sending a job to the printer. Press OK if the paper fails to load, to direct the printer to retry loading it.
To change or remove paper that is loaded in the front path, press the Cancel and OK buttons at the same time to eject the paper.

Using the rear path
The rear path is designed to provide a straight paper path for printing on thicker paper and print media (up to 0.3 mm), such as card stock or labels, without bending. This paper path only takes single sheets. To use this path, select Rear Path in the software.
  1. Place the paper in the left side of the rear path (viewed from behind), with the side to be printed on up. Make sure that the front edge of the paper is parallel to the rear path slot.
Figure : Placing paper into the rear path
  2. Push the paper into the printer as far as it will go. The printer will grab the paper and print the job.
Using the Roll Media Path
The Roll Media path is designed to provide a straight media path for printing on roll media .
  1. Place the media in the left side of the rear path (viewed from behind), with the side to be printed on up. When loading roll media, use the slot seen in the figure below as a guide.
Figure : Slot on Clean-out Assembly
  2. Make sure that the front edge of the media is parallel to the rear path slot.

  3. Push the media into the printer as far as it will go. The printer will grab the media and print the job.
