HP Designjet 5000 and 5500 Series Printers - Printer Setup

Unpack the Printer
The Designjet 5000 and 5500 series printer ships in four boxes; the Designjet 5000PS and 5500PS Printers - with the Take-Up Reel -ships in eight boxes.
  note:
Read these instructions carefully and complete each stage before beginning the next.
Each box is marked to identify the contents, as shown in the following table:

  note:
Because some of the components of the printer are bulky, it will necessary to have two or three people to lift them.
Follow these steps to unpack the printer:
  1. Remove the boxes from the top of the main printer box.

  2. Remove all eight plastic handles from both sides of the box.

  3. Remove the main printer box.
  4. Remove the two packing pieces.

Assemble the Stand
  caution:
Do not remove anti-slip material from around the wheels of the printer feet until directed to do so.
  1. Begin by attaching the legs to the outside of the cross brace.

  2. Install eight screws into the legs.

  3. Attach the feet into the cross brace with screws. Remember to leave the anti-slip material on.

  4. Position the feet into the leg assembly. Remember to leave the anti-slip material on.

  5. Secure the feet to the legs with the six (6) screws provided.
      note:
    Some screws may have come loose during assembly. Check that all screws are fully tightened.
Attach the Legs to the Printer
  1. Find the handles on the rear of the printer. There must not be any obstruction within three meters of this point.

  2. Carefully pull aside the plastic covering and put the legs assembly on the printer. Secure with four screws.
  3. Remove the accessories from the accessory boxes, and then replace the polystyrene inside the boxes. Put the two boxes on the floor, and tilt the printer onto the boxes.
      note:
    The boxes must have the polystyrene inside to support the weight of the printer.

  4. Carefully lift the printer into the upright position.
      warning:
    The printer is heavy and may require two or more people to lift it into place.
  5. Remove the media rolls and spindle from the shipping container.

  6. Remove the end packing and the plastic covering from the printer.
  7. Tear off and discard the anti-slip material from the wheels.
      note:
    It is not necessary to lift the printer to remove the anti-slip material!

  8. Install the two stabilizers onto the rear of the feet. Make sure to install both stabilizers.

  9. Install the pins into the two stabilizers and secure with the retaining clips.

  10. Adjust the stabilizer feet so that the wheels do not touch the floor.

  11. Remove the Packing Tape and the Desiccant Bag.

  12. Remove the protective covering from the printer window.
  13. Open the window and remove the carriage packing material.

  14. Install the pocket on the rear of the printer.

Install the Take-Up Reel Assembly
  1. Loosen the screws as shown below.

  2. Release the clamp on the left-hand assembly by removing the screw.

  3. Install the left-hand assembly on the loosened screws installed in step 1.

  4. Pull the left-hand assembly down so that it rests securely on the screws.

  5. Release the clamp on the right-hand assembly by removing the screw.
  6. Install the right-hand assembly on the loosened screws installed in step 1.
  7. Pull the right-hand assembly down so that it rests securely on the screws.
  8. Install the clamp and secure it with the clamp screw.

      note:
    Tighten all screws securing the Take-Up Reel onto the legs
  9. Install the front of the sensor assembly into the front of the right foot assembly.

  10. Slide the sensor clamp firmly up against the right leg, and then secure the sensor clamp with a screw.

  11. Tighten the screw to secure the clamp in place and connect the sensor cable.

  12. Be sure that the spindle lock is open.

  13. Install the take-up reel spindle onto the printer by pushing firmly on each end of the spindle.

  14. It is possible to use a 76mm (3 inch) cardboard core instead of the plastic core supplied; adapters are available with the printer.
  15. Install the adapters onto the media guides.
      note:
    These adapters are for use with a 76mm (3 inch) cardboard core only.

Install Deflectors (HP Designjet 1.52 m, 60 inch only)
  note:
If the printer is an HP Designjet 1.07 m (42 inch) and a take-up reel has been ordered as an accessory, do not install the deflectors. There is a deflector integrated into the design of the bin assembly.
  1. Install the left and right deflectors on top of the printer's cross brace.

  2. Slide deflector supports sideways until the T-piece on top of the support is inserted fully into the gap between the cross brace and the printer leg.

  3. The deflector bar can be found inside the core tubes, in the box. Rest the deflector bar on the two supports.
  4. Attach end caps to the bar and supports with the two screws provided.
  5. Connect the power cord into the rear of the take-up reel.

  6. Turn on the take-up reel by turning the switch to ON at the rear.
Bin Assembly Installation (HP Designjet 1.07 m, 42 inch only)
  1. Insert the four bars into the slots in the right bin holder, and then mount the left bin holder onto the four bars.

  2. Remove the bin film from its container. Make five creases in the film at the dimensions shown in the figure below. Note the position of the red orientation dot in relation to the creases.

  3. Slide the bin film into the grooves in the bin holders. Insert the end with the two creases first. Slide the film fully to the end, so that the creases are in the correct position.

  4. Secure the film in place with two clips at one end.

  5. Attach caps onto the clips.

  6. Secure the film in place at the other end with two more clips
  7. Attach caps onto the clips.
  8. Install end pieces to the film and sides.
  9. Remove the red orientation dot.

  10. Install the right adapter to the rear of the right leg, as shown below. The right-hand adapter is marked with the letter "R".

  11. Install the left adapter to the rear of the left leg. The left-hand adapter is marked with the letter "L".
  12. Insert the bin onto the adapters horizontally and insert the small pins into their slots.
      note:
    The bin is heavy and more than one person may be required to lift and position it.

  13. Raise the bin until the large pins align with their slots and the bin drops into place.

Front Panel Label and Power On
  1. Attach the front panel overlay to the front panel. Be sure to position the overlay cutouts correctly on the font panel locating tabs.
  2. Install the extensions onto the media deflectors.

  3. Plug the power cord into the socket next to the power switch, and then into the AC power outlet.
  4. Turn the power isolator switch at the rear of the printer to the On position.
  5. Using the Arrow keys, select the language for the front panel display, and press ENTER.

Ink System Startup
  1. The front panel displays the Printer Startup message, press ENTER.
  2. Slide all of the ink cartridges into their slots.

  3. When all six cartridges are installed correctly, the front panel will display the message HP ink cartridges successfully installed.
  4. Press ENTER. The front panel displays the printer initialization message.
  5. When the printer has primed the ink system, the front panel displays the message shown below.

  6. Open the printer window and locate the printhead carriage on the left side.
  7. The front panel will display the message shown in the figure below.

  8. Pull up and release the latch on top of the carriage assembly.

  9. Lift up the cover. This will provide access to the setup printheads.
  10. To remove the setup printhead, lift up the blue handle.

  11. Place an index finger through the loop of the blue handle and pull up.
  12. Pull upwards until the setup printhead is released from the carriage assembly.

Installing the Printhead and Printhead Cleaner
  1. Remove the blue protective cap and the clear protective tape from the printhead's nozzles.
  2. Gently push the printhead down until the printhead is installed into the carriage. When all the printheads are inserted correctly and accepted by the printer, the printer will "beep."

      note:
    If the printer does not "beep" when the last printhead is inserted, and "Reseat" is displayed on the front panel, try re-seating the printhead more firmly. If the problem continues, refer to the Using Your Printer CD.
  3. If the printheads have been installed correctly, the front panel displays the message shown below.

  4. Close the cover on the carriage and shut the printer window. The front panel will display a message instructing to Open right door to access printhead cleaners.
  5. Open the printhead cleaner access door (below the front panel display).

  6. Insert each printhead cleaner into the correct color slot.

  7. Push each printhead cleaner all the way in, then press in and down until the printhead cleaner clicks into place.
  8. After installing all printhead cleaners into the printhead service station, close the door. The front panel displays the INK STARTUP message.

    • The printer will start the printhead test, and the front panel will display a "Testing printheads" message.
    • If the printhead test is successful, the front panel will instruct to load the media to calibrate the printheads.
  9. Load the media, and press Enter. The front panel will display the message shown below.

      note:
    When the printhead alignment is completed, the front panel will display the message that the "Printer startup has finished".
  10. Press ENTER to finish the setup process.
