HP printer setup (Wi-Fi Direct)

Wi-Fi Direct is a connection option with most HP wireless printers released in 2014 and later. Use Wi-Fi Direct when a local wireless network is unavailable.

Print with Wi-Fi Direct (Windows 10)

Send a print job using a direct wireless connection between your printer and a Windows computer.

  1. Make sure paper is loaded in the main tray, and then turn on the printer.

  2. In Windows, search for and open Printers and scanners.

  3. Click Add a printer or scanner.

  4. Click Show Wi-Fi Direct printers.

  5. Select your printer with DIRECT in the name.

  6. Click Add device.

  7. After the WPS PIN prompt displays on the computer, look for a PIN on the printer control panel or the information sheet that printed during setup.

  8. Enter the PIN within 90 seconds, and then click Next to complete the connection.

    Note:

    If the PIN expires, restart your computer, and then go through the printer setup process again.

  9. If a Driver is unavailable status message displays, go to 123.hp.com to download and install the print driver.

  10. Open the item you want to print, click File, and then click Print.

  11. Select your printer from the list, and then click Print.

Send a print job using a direct wireless connection between your printer and an Android phone or tablet using the HP Smart app. Complete these steps while next to the printer.

  1. On your mobile device, download the HP Smart app from 123.hp.com.

  2. Make sure paper is loaded in the main tray, and then turn on the printer.

  3. From the app home screen, tap the Plus sign.

  4. Tap Looking for Wi-Fi Direct Printers.

What if the Wi-Fi Direct print job failed?

Check network issues and setup requirements if the print job or Wi-Fi Direct connection fails.

  • Confirm Wi-Fi Direct is on: Wi-Fi Direct must be turned on before you can send a print job to your printer.

    • Printers with touchscreens: Touch the Wi-Fi Direct icon .

      If the status is Off, touch the Settings icon , and then turn it on.

    • Printers without touchscreens: Look for a Wi-Fi Direct button , and then confirm the light next to it is on and steady. If the light is off, press the button to turn Wi-Fi Direct on.

      If you do not have a button, press the Information button , or press and hold the Resume button or until a network configuration report prints.

      For HP Tango printers, touch and hold the Information button until all control panel buttons light up, and then touch the Information button and Cancel button at the same time.

      Look for Wi-Fi Direct on the printout, and then make sure the Status is On. If it is off, use the printer Embedded Web Server (EWS) to turn it on. If Wi-Fi Direct is not listed on the report, your printer does not support the feature. Print using a different method, such as the HP Smart app or USB cable.

  • Poor Wi-Fi Direct connection: Move the printer and computer or mobile device closer together, and then resend the print job.

  • Restart devices: Restarting the printer and the computer or mobile device can clear possible error conditions.

  • Disconnect the Ethernet or USB cable: These connection types might interfere with connection and basic driver installation.

  • Install the HP print driver or mobile app: Go to 123.hp.com.

  • Restore network settings to default: Reset the printer network settings to clear any issues.

    • Printers with touchscreens: Open the Wireless menu, select Settings, and touch Restore Network Defaults or Restore Network Settings.

    • Printers without touchscreens: Press and hold the Wireless button and the Cancel buttons until the Wireless and Power lights blink.

      For HP Laser printers: Press and hold the Wireless button until the Attention light blinks. The printer might restart.

      For HP Tango printers: Press and hold the Wireless button on the back of the printer until the Edge lighting flashes blue.

How do I find the WPS PIN for printer setup?

Find and enter the WPS PIN to complete printer setup. You have a short time (90 seconds for most models) to enter the PIN before it expires.

How do I change the Wi-Fi Direct password and other settings?

Access the printer's web-based homepage, as known as the Embedded Web Server (EWS), to change the Wi-Fi Direct settings, such as status, name, and password.

  1. Connect your computer or mobile device to the printer over Wi-Fi Direct.

  2. In an internet browser address bar, type 192.168.223.1, and then press Enter.
