HP ProBook 4310s Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Keyboard

Introduction

This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the keyboard for the HP ProBook 4310s Notebook PC.

Minimum skill level

The End-User should possess product-specific knowledge and technical skill on how to service the system, and have familiarity with the operating system.

Tools required

  • Small, Phillips-head (P00 and P1) screwdrivers
  • Small Torx T8 screwdriver

note:

Keyboard removal

  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2. Remove the two 7-mm T8 Torx screws from the bottom of the notebook that secure the switch cover to the base enclosure.
  3. Remove the 3-mm P00 Phillips broad-head screw inside the battery bay.
  4. Remove the two 4-mm P1 Phillips-head screws inside the battery bay.
  5. Remove the two 7-mm T8 Torx screws marked with a keyboard icon on either side of the memory compartment that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
  6. Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel fully.
  7. Pull up on the outer edges of the switch cover to detach it from the base enclosure and rotate it away from the top edge of the keyboard. Do not remove the switch cover.
  8. Pull up on the outer edges of the keyboard to detach it from the base enclosure and flip it toward the back of the notebook to expose the keyboard ribbon cable and ZIF connector.
  9. Using minimal force, lift the locking bar up on the keyboard ZIF connector and disconnect the keyboard ribbon cable from the system board.
    note:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  10. Remove the keyboard.

Keyboard replacement

  1. Place the keyboard face down on the switch cover.
  2. Insert the keyboard ribbon cable into its ZIF connector on the system board.
  3. Push the locking bar down to lock the keyboard ribbon cable into the ZIF connector.
  4. Flip the keyboard over and toe the tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard into the slots on the top cover.
  5. Lower the keyboard into place and press along the edges of the keyboard to snap it into place.
  6. Flip the switch cover over and toe it into position on the top cover.
  7. Press along the entire length of the switch cover to snap it into place.
  8. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  9. Replace the two 7-mm T8 Torx screws marked with a keyboard icon on either side of the memory compartment that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
  10. Replace the two 4-mm P1 Phillips head screws inside the battery bay.
  11. Replace the 3-mm P00 Phillips broad-head screw inside the battery bay.
  12. Replace the two 7-mm T8 Torx screws from the bottom of the notebook that secure the switch cover to the base enclosure.
