HP Deskjet Ink Advantage K109 Printer - 'Cartridge Problem' or 'Incompatible Cartridges' Message Displays on the Computer in Windows and the Cartridge Status Lights Blink after Cartridges are Installed

Issue
A 'Cartridge Problem' or 'Incompatible Cartridges' error message displays on the computer running Windows after you install a cartridge, and one (or both) of the cartridge status lights begin to blink.
Solution
Follow these steps to resolve the issue.
  note:
If you installed two new cartridges, perform the steps on both cartridges.
Step one: Remove, inspect, and reseat the cartridge
The cartridge might not have full electrical contact with the product. Removing and reinstalling the cartridge might help.
  note:
HP cannot guarantee the quality of remanufactured or refilled cartridges. Use genuine HP cartridges for good print quality.
  1. If the product is not already on, press the Power button () to turn it on.
  2. Open the cartridge door.
The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

Step two: Clean the cartridge contacts
Follow these steps to clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge.
  note:
Do not reinsert the cartridge until prompted to do so in the steps.
  1. Gather the following materials:
    • Dry foam-rubber swabs, lint-free cloth, or any soft material that will not come apart or leave fibers (coffee filters work well)
    • Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might contain contaminants that can damage the cartridges)
        caution:
Do not use platen cleaners or alcohol to clean the cartridge contacts. These can damage the cartridge or the product.
  2. If the product is not already on, press the Power button () to turn it on.
  3. Open the cartridge door.
The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.
  4. Lightly press down on a cartridge to release it, and then pull the cartridge out to remove it from its slot.

  9. Hold the cartridge with the HP logo on top, and insert the cartridge back into its slot. Push the cartridge in firmly until it snaps into place.
  10. Close the cartridge door.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next step.
Step three: Repeat the reseating and cleaning steps
If the issue is not solved, repeat the reseating and cleaning procedure in "Step one: Remove, inspect, and reseat the cartridge," and "Step two: Clean the cartridge contacts."
  • If these steps resolved the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next step.
Step four: Replace the cartridge
  note:
If you do not have a replacement cartridge available, you can still print. Remove the problem cartridge, and then print with the remaining cartridge. If you remove the tri-color cartridge, the printouts are in grayscale. If you remove the black cartridge, the product prints slowly and the colors in the printouts might differ.
  note:
The product shown in the animation might look slightly different from your product, but the steps are the same.
  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product, if it is not already turned on.
  2. Open the cartridge door.
The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.
  3. Lightly press down on a cartridge to release it, and then pull the cartridge out to remove it from its slot.
  4. On the replacement cartridge, carefully remove the plastic tape using the pink pull tab.
      caution:
Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or ink nozzles. Also, do not re-tape the cartridges. Doing so can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.
Figure : Remove the plastic tape
    Illustration of removing the tape
  5. Hold the cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the product, and then insert the cartridge into the slot until it snaps into place.

  • If these steps resolved the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
