HP Compaq nw8440 Mobile Workstation - Removing and Replacing the Processor Heat Sink

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the Processor heat sink for the HP Compaq nw8440 Mobile Workstation.
Tools required
P1 Phillips-head screw driver

The replacement part number will vary depending on the HP Compaq nw8440 Mobile Workstation that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

Processor heat sink removal
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2. Loosen the four captive, P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the heat sink to the system board in a 1-2-3-4 pattern.s
      note:
    The heat sink has numbers adjacent to each of the following four screws.
  3. Lift the heat sink off of the processor and slide it toward the inside of the notebook until the outside edge is clear of the top cover.
  4. Remove the heat sink.
Processor heat sink replacement
  note:
Before replacing the heat sink, the thermal grease should be replaced. The thermal grease should be replaced every time the heat sink is removed.
  1. Toe the outside edge of the heat sink into the base enclosure.
  2. Slide the heat sink toward the outside of the notebook.
  3. Position the heat sink on top of the processor and align the four mounting screws with the holes in the system board.
      note:
    The heat sink has numbers adjacent to each of the following four screws.
  4. Tighten the four captive, P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the heat sink to the system board in a 1-2-3-4 pattern.
