Step 1 - Remove the battery
  1. Slide the battery release latch to the release position.
  2. Slide and hold the battery locking latch to the unlocked position.
  3. Slide the battery out of the battery bay.
Step 2 - Replace the battery
  1. Slide the battery into the battery bay until it is properly seated and the locking latch clicks.

Step 1 - Remove the battery

Step 2 - Remove the keyboard
  1. Loosen the four captive P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
  2. Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel fully.
  3. Use a flat-bladed tool or your finger to lift the top edge of the keyboard and then place it upside down on the top cover.
  4. Using minimal force, lift the locking bar to unlock the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board (only on models with a pointing stick).
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  5. Remove the pointing stick ribbon cable from the ZIF connector.
  6. Using minimal force, flip the locking bar up to unlock the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  7. Remove the keyboard ribbon cable from the ZIF connector and remove the keyboard.
Step 3 - Remove the memory board
  1. Push both arms outward simultaneously to release the primary memory board to the spring tension position.
      caution:
    When handling a memory board, use care to prevent touching the memory chips on the board. Touching the memory chips could damage or destroy the memory.
  2. Grasp the primary memory board by the edges and pull gently to remove it.
  3. Place the primary memory board in a static dissipative bag.
Step 4 - Replace the memory board
  1. Remove the primary memory board from the static dissipative bag.
  2. Locate the alignment slot and align it to the empty board receptacle.
  3. Grasp the primary memory board by the edges and push gently to replace it.
      caution:
    When handling a memory board, use care to prevent touching the memory chips on the board. Touching the memory chips could damage or destroy the memory.
  4. Press the primary memory board down to latch the arms.
Step 5 - Replace the keyboard
  1. Place the keyboard upside down on the top cover.
  2. Insert the keyboard ribbon cable into the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the keyboard ribbon cable.
  3. Push the locking bar down to lock the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
  4. Insert the pointing stick ribbon cable into the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board (only on models with a pointing stick).
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the pointing stick ribbon cable.
  5. Push the locking bar down to lock the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board.
  6. Toe the tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard into the top cover and press the keyboard flat.
  7. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  8. Tighten the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
Step 6 - Replace the battery
  1. Slide the battery into the battery bay until it is properly seated and the locking latch clicks.

  1. Loosen the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the expansion memory/wireless LAN Minicard cover to the bottom of the notebook.
  2. Use your finger or a flat-bladed tool to lift the edge of the expansion memory/wireless LAN Minicard cover and remove it.
  3. Push both arms outward simultaneously to release the expansion memory board to the spring tension position.
      caution:
    When handling a memory board, use care to prevent touching the memory chips on the board. Touching the memory chips could damage or destroy the memory.
  4. Grasp the expansion memory board by the edges and pull gently to remove it.
  5. Place the expansion memory board in a static dissipative bag.
Step 3 - Replace the expansion memory board
  1. Remove the expansion memory board from the static dissipative bag.
  2. Locate the alignment slot and align it to the empty board receptacle.
  3. Grasp the expansion memory board by the edges and push gently to replace it.
      caution:
    When handling a memory board, use care to prevent touching the memory chips on the board. Touching the memory chips could damage or destroy the memory.
  4. Press the expansion memory board down to latch the arms.
  5. Toe the expansion memory/wireless LAN Minicard cover into the enclosure.
  6. Tighten the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws.

Step 2 - Remove the hard disk drive
  1. Loosen the two captive P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the hard disk drive cover to the bottom of the notebook.
      note:
    Screw location is indicated by the appropriate icon.
  2. Use your finger or a flat-bladed tool to lift the outside edge of the hard disk drive cover and remove it.
  3. Loosen the captive spring-loaded P1 Phillips-head screw that secures the hard disk drive.
  4. Grasp the plastic tab and pull the hard disk drive toward the outside edge of the base enclosure to disconnect the hard disk drive from the system board connector.
  5. Lift the hard disk drive out of the bay and remove.
  6. Place the hard disk drive in a static dissipative bag.
Step 3 - Replace the hard disk drive
  1. Remove the hard disk drive from the static dissipative bag.
  2. Place the hard disk drive into the hard disk drive bay.
  3. Push the hard disk drive toward the inside of the base enclosure until the connector is seated.
  4. Tighten the captive spring-loaded P1 Phillips-head screw that secures the hard disk drive.
  5. Toe the hard disk drive cover into the enclosure.
  6. Tighten the two captive P1 Phillips-head screws.
Step 4 - Replace the battery
  1. Slide the battery into the battery bay until it is properly seated and the locking latch clicks.

  1. Remove the T8-9 mm screw that secures the optical drive to the base enclosure.
      note:
    Screw location is indicated by the appropriate icon.
  2. Use a small, flat-bladed tool to push out on the metal tab on the rear of the optical drive to partially eject it from the base enclosure.
  3. Grasp the optical drive bezel and pull the optical drive out of the base enclosure.
Step 3 - Replace the optical drive
  1. Insert the optical drive into the base enclosure until the connector is seated.
  2. Replace the T8-9 mm screw that secures the optical drive to the base enclosure.
Step 4 - Replace the battery
  1. Slide the battery into the battery bay until it is properly seated and the locking latch clicks.

  7. Remove the keyboard ribbon cable from the ZIF connector and remove the keyboard.
Step 3 - Replace the keyboard
  1. Place the keyboard upside down on the top cover.
  2. Insert the keyboard ribbon cable into the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the keyboard ribbon cable.
  3. Push the locking bar down to lock the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
  4. Insert the pointing stick ribbon cable into the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board (only on models with a pointing stick).
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the pointing stick ribbon cable.
  5. Push the locking bar down to lock the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board.
  6. Toe the tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard into the top cover and press the keyboard flat.
  7. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  8. Tighten the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
Step 4 - Replace the battery
  1. Slide the battery into the battery bay until it is properly seated and the locking latch clicks.

  7. Remove the keyboard ribbon cable from the ZIF connector and remove the keyboard.
Step 3 - Remove the LED switchcover
  1. Remove the four T8-3 mm screws inside the battery bay that secure the LED switch cover to the base enclosure.
  2. Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel fully.
  3. Disconnect the power button board cable from the power button board connector on the system board.
  4. Use a flat-bladed tool to lift the LED switch cover hinge covers off of the display panel hinges.
  5. Separate the LED switch cover from the top cover.
      caution:
    Do not bend the LED switch cover as this may damage capacitors located on the underside of the board.
  6. Disconnect the LED board cable from the LED board connector on the system board and remove the LED switch cover.
Step 4 - Remove the power button board
  1. Remove the T8-3 mm screw that secures the power button board to the LED switch cover.
  2. Lift the power button board off of the LED switch cover and remove.
  3. Place the power button board in a static dissipative bag.
Step 5 - Replace the power button board
  1. Remove the power button board from the static dissipative bag.
  2. Align and place the power button board into position on the LED switch cover.
  3. Replace the T8-3 mm screw that secures the power button board to the LED switch cover.
Step 6 - Replace the switchcover
  caution:
Do not bend the LED switch cover as this may damage capacitors located on the underside of the board.
  1. Reconnect the LED board cable to the LED board connector on the system board.
  2. Place the LED switch cover into position on the top cover.
  3. Press along the entire length of the LED switch cover to snap it into place.
  4. Reconnect the power button board cable to the power button board connector on the system board.
  5. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  6. Replace the four T8-3 mm screws inside the battery bay that secure the LED switch cover to the base enclosure.
Step 7 - Replace the keyboard
  1. Place the keyboard upside down on the top cover.
  2. Insert the keyboard ribbon cable into the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the keyboard ribbon cable.
  3. Push the locking bar down to lock the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
  4. Insert the pointing stick ribbon cable into the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board (only on models with a pointing stick).
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the pointing stick ribbon cable.
  5. Push the locking bar down to lock the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board.
  6. Toe the tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard into the top cover and press the keyboard flat.
  7. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  8. Tighten the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
Step 8 - Replace the battery
  1. Slide the battery into the battery bay until it is properly seated and the locking latch clicks.

Step 1 - Remove the battery

Step 2 - Remove the Real-Time Clock battery
  1. Loosen the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the expansion memory/wireless LAN Minicard cover to the bottom of the notebook.
  2. Use your finger or a flat-bladed tool to lift the edge of the expansion memory/wireless LAN Minicard cover and remove it.
  3. Disconnect the RTC battery cable from the system board.
  4. Use a small, flat-bladed tool to pry the RTC battery out of the socket on the base enclosure.
Step 3 - Replace the Real-Time Clock battery
  1. Remove the paper backing from the RTC battery.
  2. Insert and press the RTC battery into the socket on the base enclosure.
  3. Reconnect the RTC battery cable to the system board.
  4. Toe the expansion memory/wireless LAN Minicard cover into the enclosure.
  5. Tighten the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws.
Step 4 - Replace the battery
  1. Slide the battery into the battery bay until it is properly seated and the locking latch clicks.

Step 1 - Remove the battery

Step 2 - Remove the wireless LAN Minicard
  1. Loosen the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the expansion memory/wireless LAN Minicard cover to the bottom of the notebook.
  2. Use your finger or a flat-bladed tool to lift the edge of the expansion memory/wireless LAN Minicard cover and remove it.
  3. Carefully disconnect the wireless antenna cables from the Minicard by grasping the connectors with a small needlenose pliers or tweezers.
      caution:
    Use care when disconnecting the wireless antenna cables from the Minicard. Damaged cables or connectors can degrade notebook performance.
  4. Remove the two 3 mm P0 Phillips-head screws that secure the Minicard to the base enclosure and allow it to release to the spring tension position.
  5. Grasp the Minicard by the edges and pull gently to remove it.
  6. Place the Minicard in a static dissipative bag.
Step 3 - Replace the wireless LAN Minicard
  1. Remove the Minicard from the static dissipative bag.
  2. Locate the alignment slot and align it to the board receptacle.
  3. Grasp the Minicard by the edges and push gently to replace it.
  4. Press the Minicard down and replace the two 3 mm P0 Phillips-head screws that secure the Minicard to the base enclosure.
  5. Reconnect the wireless antenna cables to the Minicard.
      caution:
    Use care when connecting the wireless antenna cables to the Minicard. Damaged cables or connectors can degrade notebook performance.
  6. Toe the expansion memory/wireless LAN Minicard cover into the enclosure.
  7. Tighten the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws.
Step 4 - Replace the battery
  1. Slide the battery into the battery bay until it is properly seated and the locking latch clicks.

  7. Remove the keyboard ribbon cable from the ZIF connector and remove the keyboard.
Step 3 - Remove the TouchPad Assembly
  1. Remove the T8-9 mm screw that secures the TouchPad assembly to the base enclosure.
  2. Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel fully.
  3. Lift the rear edge of the TouchPad assembly and remove it from the top cover.
  4. Disconnect the TouchPad cable from the system board.
  5. Remove the TouchPad assembly from the notebook.
Step 4 - Replace the the TouchPad Assembly
  1. Place the TouchPad assembly over the palm rest.
  2. Reconnect the TouchPad cable to the system board.
  3. Toe the front edge of the TouchPad assembly into the top cover and lower the rear edge into position until it snaps into place.
  4. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  5. Replace the T8-9 mm screw that secures the TouchPad assembly to the base enclosure.
Step 5 - Replace the keyboard
  1. Place the keyboard upside down on the top cover.
  2. Insert the keyboard ribbon cable into the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the keyboard ribbon cable.
  3. Push the locking bar down to lock the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
  4. Insert the pointing stick ribbon cable into the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board (only on models with a pointing stick).
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the pointing stick ribbon cable.
  5. Push the locking bar down to lock the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board.
  6. Toe the tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard into the top cover and press the keyboard flat.
  7. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  8. Tighten the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
Step 6 - Replace the battery

  7. Remove the keyboard ribbon cable from the ZIF connector and remove the keyboard.
Step 3 - Remove the TouchPad Assembly
  1. Remove the T8-9 mm screw that secures the TouchPad assembly to the base enclosure.
  2. Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel fully.
  3. Lift the rear edge of the TouchPad assembly and remove it from the top cover.
  4. Disconnect the TouchPad cable from the system board.
  5. Remove the TouchPad assembly from the notebook.
Step 4- Remove the modem
  1. Remove the two, 3 mm P0 Phillips-head screws that secure the modem board to the system board.
  2. Lift the end of the modem board to disconnect from the system board.
  3. Disconnect the modem board cable from the modem board.
  4. Place the modem board in a static dissipative bag.
Step 5 - Replace the modem
  1. Remove the modem board from the static dissipative bag.
  2. Reconnect the modem board cable to the modem board.
  3. While routing the modem board cable, align the modem board connector with the connector on the system board.
  4. Press down on the end of the modem board to seat the connector.
  5. Replace the two, 3 mm P0 Phillips-head screws that secure the modem board to the system board.
Step 6 - Replace the the TouchPad Assembly
  1. Place the TouchPad assembly over the palm rest.
  2. Reconnect the TouchPad cable to the system board.
  3. Toe the front edge of the TouchPad assembly into the top cover and lower the rear edge into position until it snaps into place.
  4. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  5. Replace the T8-9 mm screw that secures the TouchPad assembly to the base enclosure.
Step 7 - Replace the keyboard
  1. Place the keyboard upside down on the top cover.
  2. Insert the keyboard ribbon cable into the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the keyboard ribbon cable.
  3. Push the locking bar down to lock the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
  4. Insert the pointing stick ribbon cable into the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board (only on models with a pointing stick).
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the pointing stick ribbon cable.
  5. Push the locking bar down to lock the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board.
  6. Toe the tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard into the top cover and press the keyboard flat.
  7. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  8. Tighten the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
Step 8 - Replace the battery

  3. Use a flat-bladed tool or your finger to lift the top edge of the keyboard and then place it upside down on the top cover.
  4. Using minimal force, lift the locking bar to unlock the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board (only on models with a pointing stick).
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  5. Remove the pointing stick ribbon cable from the ZIF connector.
  6. Using minimal force, flip the locking bar up to unlock the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  7. Remove the keyboard ribbon cable from the ZIF connector and remove the keyboard.
Step 3 - Remove the LED switch cover
  1. Remove the four T8-3 mm screws inside the battery bay that secure the LED switch cover to the base enclosure.
  2. Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel fully.
  3. Disconnect the power button board cable from the power button board connector on the system board.
  4. Use a flat-bladed tool to lift the LED switch cover hinge covers off of the display panel hinges.
  5. Separate the LED switch cover from the top cover.
      caution:
    Do not bend the LED switch cover as this may damage capacitors located on the underside of the board.
  6. Disconnect the LED board cable from the LED board connector on the system board and remove the LED switch cover.
Step 4 - Replace the LED switch cover
  note:
Before replacing the LED switch cover, remove the power button board from the old LED switch cover and install it on the new LED switch cover.
  caution:
Do not bend the LED switch cover as this may damage capacitors located on the underside of the board.
  1. Reconnect the LED board cable to the LED board connector on the system board.
  2. Place the LED switch cover into position on the top cover.
  3. Press along the entire length of the LED switch cover to snap it into place.
  4. Reconnect the power button board cable to the power button board connector on the system board.
  5. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  6. Replace the four T8-3 mm screws inside the battery bay that secure the LED switch cover to the base enclosure.
Step 5 - Replace the keyboard
  1. Place the keyboard upside down on the top cover.
  2. Insert the keyboard ribbon cable into the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the keyboard ribbon cable.
  3. Push the locking bar down to lock the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
  4. Insert the pointing stick ribbon cable into the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board (only on models with a pointing stick).
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the pointing stick ribbon cable.
  5. Push the locking bar down to lock the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board.
  6. Toe the tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard into the top cover and press the keyboard flat.
  7. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  8. Tighten the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
Step 6 - Replace the battery
  1. Slide the battery into the battery bay until it is properly seated and the locking latch clicks.

Step 1 - Remove the battery
  1. Slide the battery release latch to the release position.
  2. Slide and hold the battery locking latch to the unlocked position.
  3. Slide the battery out of the battery bay.
Step 2 - Remove the hard disk drive
  1. Loosen the two captive P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the hard disk drive cover to the bottom of the notebook.
      note:
    Screw location is indicated by the appropriate icon.
  2. Use your finger or a flat-bladed tool to lift the outside edge of the hard disk drive cover and remove it.
  3. Loosen the captive spring-loaded P1 Phillips-head screw that secures the hard disk drive.
  4. Grasp the plastic tab and pull the hard disk drive toward the outside edge of the base enclosure to disconnect the hard disk drive from the system board connector.
  5. Lift the hard disk drive out of the bay and remove.
  6. Place the hard disk drive in a static dissipative bag.
Step 3 - Remove the Bluetooth module
  1. Unroute the Bluetooth cable from the base enclosure.
  2. Slide the Bluetooth module out of the slot in the hard disk drive bay.
  3. Disconnect the Bluetooth module cable from the Bluetooth module.
  4. Place the Bluetooth module in a static dissipative bag.
Step 4 - Replace the Bluetooth module
  1. Remove the Bluetooth module from the static dissipative bag.
  2. Reconnect the Bluetooth module cable to the Bluetooth module.
  3. Slide the Bluetooth module into the slot in the hard disk drive bay.
  4. Reroute the Bluetooth cable into the base enclosure.
Step 5 - Replace the hard disk drive
  1. Remove the hard disk drive from the static dissipative bag.
  2. Place the hard disk drive into the hard disk drive bay.
  3. Push the hard disk drive toward the inside of the base enclosure until the connector is seated.
  4. Tighten the captive spring-loaded P1 Phillips-head screw that secures the hard disk drive.
  5. Toe the hard disk drive cover into the enclosure.
  6. Tighten the two captive P1 Phillips-head screws.
Step 6 - Replace the battery
  1. Slide the battery into the battery bay until it is properly seated and the locking latch clicks.
