A 'Paper Jam' Message Displays for HP Photosmart D5145, D5155, D5156, D5160, and D5168 Printers

Issue

This document contains instructions for clearing a paper jam. Follow the instructions below to find and remove jammed paper from the HP Photosmart D5100 series printers.

When the paper icon begins to flash on the printer display screen, it indicates that there is a paper jam or the printer is out of paper.
  caution:
Do not pull the jammed paper out from the front of the printer. This can cause mechanical damage to the printer.

Solution

To clear a paper jam, follow the instructions:

Step one: Check for and remove any paper stuck in the paper In tray

  1. Turn the printer off and then unplug the printer.
  2. Gently remove the jammed paper from the printer.
  3. Resume printing.
  4. If you cleared the paper jam, skip to Step four: Verify the print cartridge carriage can move freely.
  5. If there are several (8 to 10) sheets jammed, grasp a sheet in the middle of the stack and with firm, even pressure, pull the sheet toward you. Usually, removing one or two sheets from the middle of the stack will release the pressure and the rest of the paper can be removed.
  6. After removing the paper, check inside of the printer to make sure that there are no pieces of paper still inside the printer.
    If the issue still persists go to the next step.

Step two: Clear jam from the back of printer

If the paper jam is not accessible from the In tray, follow the instructions to clear the paper from the back of the printer.
  1. Turn the printer off and then unplug the printer.
  2. Remove the rear access door.

  3. Remove any paper that is inside the printer by pulling the paper out from the back of the printer
    note:
    If labels were printed recently, check to see that there are no labels stuck inside the printer. If there are, carefully peel them off.
  4. Replace the rear access door.
  5. Plug in the printer and turn it on.
  6. Print the document again.

Step three: Lift the front cover and slowly remove any jammed paper

If the paper jam cannot be removed from the back of the printer, raise the printer cover, remove the paper jam from the front of the printer, and then lower the cover.
  1. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the unit.
  2. Raise the printer cover.
  3. Gently pull the paper out of the rollers.
  4. Close the printer cover.
  5. Connect the power cord to the back of the unit.
  6. Press OK and continue to print.
      warning:
    Remove the paper jam carefully because it is possible to damage the printer when removing paper from the front.

Step four: Verify the print cartridge carriage can move freely

  1. Unplug the power cable.
  2. Check to see if the print cartridge carriage will move freely from one side of the printer to the other. If the carriage is to the right and out of plain view, skip to Step five: Reload and test the printer. Do not try to force it to move if it is hung up on something.
      caution:
    Be careful not to force the print cartridge carriage. If the carriage is stuck, forcing it to move will damage the printer.
    If the carriage moves freely, skip to Step five: Reload and test the printer.
    If the carriage does not move, continue with the next step.
  3. Remove the print cartridges.
  4. Gently move the print cartridge to the far right of the printer.
  5. Remove the paper from the paper In tray, but do not remove the drawer.
  6. Remove the rear access door.
  7. With your fingers, rotate the rollers up three full rotations.
  8. Push the rear access door back into the printer until it snaps firmly into place.
  9. Replace the print cartridges.
  10. Plug the power cable into the printer and turn the printer on.

Step five: Reload and test the printer

  1. Re-load the paper in the In tray. Fan the paper to ensure that the pages are not stuck together.
  2. Turn on the printer and open the document that jammed in the application in which it was created.
  3. Click File, then click Print, and click Properties.
  4. On the Printing Preferences window, click the Paper/Quality tab.
  5. Verify that the type of paper specified in the Type is text box matches the type of paper in the printer.
    note:
    A paper jam might result if photo paper is specified in the Printer Properties dialog box but plain paper is loaded in the printer.
  6. Print the document again.

Step six: Service the printer

If you have tried all the steps listed in the instructions above and you still cannot get the paper out, service the printer.

Cause

Prevent paper jams by keeping the following in mind.
  • Do not use extremely smooth, shiny, or coated papers unless they are specifically designed for HP Photosmart printers.
  • While printing from 3.8mm HP Premium Inkjet Transparency Film, make sure that media is loaded in the paper tray such that the arrows on the strip face up and point at the user.
  • Do not use multi-part forms (such as duplicate or triplicate forms).
  • Do not use torn, dusty, damp, wrinkled, or curled paper.
  • Do not use paper with bent edges or paper that will not lie flat.
  • Make sure that the out tray is installed correctly.
  • Make sure that the paper adjusters are not pushed up so tightly against the paper that it is bending in the paper tray. The paper-width adjuster should be placed against the left side of the paper.
  • Do not put more than 100 sheets of 75 g/m2 paper (or a .5 inch stack) in the paper tray.
  • Do not keep more than 50 sheets in the out tray.
  • Do not use paper longer than 356 mm (14 inches).
  • Do not mix paper types in the paper tray.
    note:
    If paper jams continue, try printing with other media or paper types. Refer to your User’s Manual for supported media types and specifications.
