HP Deskjet 460 series - Set Up the Printer Hardware
Introduction
This document applies to the following printers:
HP Deskjet 460, 460c, 460cb, 460wbt, and 460wf.
Set up the printer
Follow the steps below to set up the product hardware.
note:The instructions below refer to using a Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable. You might have to purchase the cable separately as it might not be included with the product in every country/region.
Step one: Check the contents of the box
The
contents might vary by country/region.
Refer to the packaging for the actual
contents.
Step two: Unpack the product
Remove all packing tape from the printer.

Step three: Install the battery
note:The battery is not included in the box for all models. You might have to purchase the battery separately, depending upon the model of printer that you have.

Slide the battery into the battery slot at an angle until the battery is flush with the contacts.Figure : Install the battery

Push the battery into the battery slot until the battery clicks into place.
note:Use only the battery specifically designed for use with this printer.Fully charge the battery before using (approximately 4 hours for the first charge, 2 hours for subsequent charges). The Power light is green when the battery is 41-100% charged, amber when 10-40% charged, and red when less than 10% charged. Charge the battery when the Power light turns amber. If it turns red, charge the battery as soon as possible. The battery status is also displayed on the Printer Status tab in the Toolbox (Windows) and the Power Management panel in the HP Printer Utility (Mac).
Step four: Install the wireless printer card (HP Deskjet 460wf or HP Deskjet 460wbt)
note:Insert the HP 802.11 printer card or Bluetooth card, with the lights facing up, into the CompactFlash card slot. Push in the card until it stops. Then lift up slightly on the card, and push further until it clicks into place.

note:If you are installing a Bluetooth card, make sure that your Bluetooth host device and operating system are supported by the printer.
Step five: Connect the power cord
caution:Do not connect the USB cable until prompted to do so during software installation.

Connect the power adapter to the printer.Figure : Connecting the power

Connect the power cord to the power adapter.

Connect the other end of the power cord to an alternating current (AC) power outlet.
Step six: Turn on the printer

Press the
Power button to turn on the printer. The printer lights will flash in sequence.
note:
Wait until the power light is the only printer light that remains lit.Figure : Turn on the printer
Step seven: Install the print cartridges

When the power light is the only light lit, open the front access cover and wait for the carriage to stop at the cartridge change position.Figure : Open the access door

Lift up the print cartridge latches.Figure : Lift the print cartridge latches

Remove each print cartridge from its package, and then remove the protective tape from the print cartridge.Figure : Remove the print cartridges

Insert the color print cartridge into the left cradle compartment and the black print cartridge into the right cradle compartment. Press down on both cartridges to ensure they are seated completely in the cradles.Figure : Insert the print cartridges

Snap the cartridge latches onto the print cartridges.Figure : Close the latches

Close the front access cover.Figure : Close the access cover
note:
Do not open the front access cover until the printer has finished starting up.
Step eight: Load paper in the input tray

Insert up to 50 sheets of plain paper or 10 sheets of photo paper into the tray.Figure : Loading paper

Slide the paper guide snugly against the edge of the paper.
Step nine: Install the printer software

Close any running applications and insert the Starter CD into the CD drive of the computer.

The CD menu starts automatically. If the CD menu does not start automatically, double-click the Setup.exe icon on the Starter CD.

On the CD menu, click Install Printer Driver. Follow the onscreen instructions.

Select one of the following three connections to complete the software installation:

USB connection: Connect the USB cable when prompted.

802.11 wireless connection: Have a USB cable nearby to connect the printer when prompted and then remove it after setup.
note:
The printer will turn off and on when it receives the settings through the USB cable. Remove the USB cable when prompted.note:
Current 802.11 settings will be saved to the current position of the wireless profile switch. The wireless profile switch is used to switch between 802.11 profile settings when changing wireless networks. -
Bluetooth wireless connection:
-
Select Other Port when prompted for the port and Skip when prompted to connect the printer and complete printer driver installation.

Using the Bluetooth configuration software on your computer, locate the COM port number for the Bluetooth Client assigned to your Bluetooth device. For example, if you are using a 3Com Bluetooth adapter on your computer, open the Bluetooth Connection Manager, select COM ports from the Tools menu, and take note of the COM port number of the 3Com Bluetooth Serial Client port.

From the Windows desktop, click the Start button, highlight Settings, and then click Printers or Printers and Faxes.

Right-click the printer icon, and then click Properties.

Click the Ports tab and select the COM port as identified in the steps above.

Click Apply, and then click OK.

Step ten: Test the software installation
To test the software installation and printer connection, print
a document from an application you use frequently.
Step eleven: Align the print cartridges
Whenever you install a new print cartridge, you should align the print cartridges for the best possible print quality.

Click Start, and highlight Programs. Select HP Deskjet 460 Series, and then click the Toolbox icon.

Click the Printer Services tab, and then click Align Print Cartridges. The printer prints an alignment page.

Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the alignment procedure.
