HP Designjet 500, 510, and 800 Series Printers - Driver Installation Errors Using Add Printer Wizard in Windows XP

Issue:
When trying to install the printer driver (directly connected) using the Add Printer Wizard you receive an error message similar to the following: Unable to Install Printer. Either the printer name was typed incorrectly, or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server. For more information, click Help.
Solution
Download and install the latest driver version from the HP Software and Drivers page.
Cause
According to Microsoft's Web site (Doc 330386), this is a problem with Microsoft Windows server 2003, Datacenter, Enterprise, Standard, Web, 64-bit Enterprise, and 64-Bit Datacenter editions and is caused by trying to install a Hewlett- Packard printer driver that is based on an INF file.
Summary
According to Microsoft, certain Hewlett-Packard .INF-based printer drivers that are created for Windows XP are not compatible with Windows server 2003. If you use drivers that are labeled as Windows XP printer drivers, this problem will occur. It goes on to say that this is a problem only with the driver HP distributes; it is apparently not a problem with the printer drivers that are included with Windows server 2003.
