Compaq Presario Desktop PCs - Restoring Original Drivers and Software

This document applies to Compaq Presarios that shipped with Windows 95, 98, Me, and XP.
This document explains how to restore software programs and drivers to their original state by using the recovery process.
Restoring software and drivers on most systems with Windows XP
Perform the following steps, in order, to restore a software application or driver:
  1. Click Start, and then All Programs.
  2. Click one of the following: HP Tools, Compaq, or Compaq Tools. If none of these start menu directories exist then skip to the next step.
  3. Click one of the following: Compaq Presario PC Tools or Compaq Presario Tools.
  4. Click one of the following: HP Application Recovery or Compaq Application Recovery.
  5. In the Recovery window, select either Drivers or Applications as desired and click Next.
  6. Select the software driver or application to reinstall, and then click Next or Install. The driver or application automatically reinstalls. Some programs take longer to install than others.
Restoring software and drivers on 5000 or 7000 series desktops
Presario 5000 and 7000 series desktops have different methods of restoring software and drivers depending on the operating system that came preinstalled on the computer.
Windows 98
  1. Click Start, then Compaq Support.
  2. Click the Quick Restore icon and the Selective option.
  3. Select the software driver or application to reinstall, and then click OK.
Windows ME
  1. Click Start, then Help . The Help and Support window appears.
  2. Under the heading Welcome to the Compaq Knowledge Center, click Restore My Presario.
  3. Click 2. Compaq Quick Restore. The Compaq Quick Restore window appears.
  4. Click the colored Cube icon to choose Selective Restore.
  5. Select the software driver or application to reinstall, and click OK.
Windows XP
  1. Click Start, then Help and Support.
  2. Click Undo harmful unintended changes to your system.
  3. Select the software driver or application to reinstall, and click OK.
  4. Restart the computer after the installation.
Restoring software and drivers on 4000 or 6000 series desktops
  1. Click Start, then Help and Support.
  2. Click Undo harmful or unintended changes to your system.
  3. Under Compaq Selective Restore, click the category of software to be restored. A list of the available software appears. See figure 1.

  4. Click on the application or driver you wish to install.
  5. Click Yes when the You are about to reinstall your software. Are you sure you want to continue? dialog box appears.
  6. Click OK when the Selective Restore has finished installing the component you selected dialog box appears.
Recovering software using Software Setup
Your Presario PC may also have software called Software Setup. Use the following steps to see if the PC has this software and to restore software or application using the Software Setup option:
  1. Click Start, and then click All Programs.
  2. Click Software Setup if it exists. If not, you will have to use another section of this document. The Software Setup Welcome screen opens.
  3. Click Next at the Welcome screen.
  4. Click to select the software program that you want to install and follow the on-screen instructions.
Finding the name of hardware drivers
Determining which component name matches the name in the recovery window can be difficult. Perform the following steps to find the correct software name for a hardware component (modem, sound card, video card, monitor, network interface card) that is installed in the Compaq Presario computer:
  1. In Windows XP, click Start, and then right-click the My Computer icon. In Windows 98 and Me, right-click the My Computer icon from the Windows Desktop.
  2. In Windows XP, click Properties, then click the Hardware tab. In Windows 98 or Me, click Properties from the menu that appears.
  3. Click Device Manager.
  4. Click View Devices By Type and read the list of devices.
  5. Click the plus sign (+) next to the device type that you are looking for.

  6. Write down the listings that appear underneath. For example, the main sound drivers for Figure 1 would be the Crystal SoundFusion Audio Device.
  7. Use the name written down to select the proper device driver when restoring a driver.
