HP Designjet Printer Family - Solving Driver Installation Issues for AutoCAD 12 for DOS

Issue:
The driver cannot be added as a new printer selection because it is not listed under AutoCAD's list of available printer drivers. (The driver, "!! HP-GL/2 ADI 4.2 printer driver v 2.3, by Hewlett-Packard, is usually selection #2 when adding a printer in AutoCAD.)
Solution
Check the following:
  • The batch file used to start AutoCAD 12 does not have the proper SET statements needed to load the driver or the SET statements have the incorrect path or filename. This will happen during driver installation if the incorrect batch file name is specified.
  • The driver files that are SET in the batch file have been deleted or are not at the specified path.
  • System does not have enough environment space and the SET statements were not loaded into memory. This problem will generate "Out of environment space" message as the batch file executes.
  • The driver has not yet been installed. Run the driver's install program (A:\install).
If the problem is related to SET Statements
First try to re-install the driver, specifying the correct name and path of the batch file used to start AutoCAD 12 for DOS. This may be the fastest way to solve the problem.
If re-installing the driver does not solve this issue try to manually modify the batch file used to start AutoCAD to reflect proper driver installation, described as follows.
Append the path of the HPGL2 directory to the "SET ACADDRV=" line.
Directly below the "SET ACADDRV=" line, add the following new line:
SET RHPADI=(the path where the RHPRTL.EXP file is located)
Example:
SET RHPADI=C:\ACADR12\DRV\HPGL2\RHPRTL.EXP
Sample Example Batch File
Below is an example batch file, where the AutoCAD directory is C:\ACADR12 and the HP driver directory is C:\ACADR12\DRV\HPGL2. Driver installation modifications are denoted by bold text.
************************************************************************************************
SET ACAD=C:\ACADR12\SUPPORT;C:\ACADR12\FONTS;C:\ACADR12\ADS
SET ACADCFG=C:\ACADR12
SET ACADDRV=C:\ACADR12\DRV;C:\ACADR12\DRV\HPGL2
SET RHPADI=C:\ACADR12\DRV\HPGL2\RHPRTL.EXP
C:\ACADR12\ACAD %1 %2
************************************************************************************************
If the problem is related to system environment space, increase environment space
To increase the amount of memory reserved for environment variables, add or modify the SHELL command in the CONFIG.SYS file. The CONFIG.SYS file is located in the root directory of the boot drive, usually C drive. The CONFIG.SYS file may be modified with an ASCII text editor. The following is a typical SHELL statement used to increase the environment space size to 512 bytes:
shell=c:\command.com /p /e:512
Please refer to the driver documentation file, HP_R12.DOC, which is located in the same directory as the other driver files or to the DOS operating manual for more detailed information on the shell statement.
System locks up when adding driver
ISSUE: When trying to add the driver through AutoCAD's CONFIG, the system locks up, or unexpectedly returns to a DOS prompt.
Solution
The following solutions are provided.
  note:
Please contact the vendor(s) of the non-standard drivers to check for updated device drivers for the product.
  • There is a memory conflict between device drivers. Memory conflicts are most often caused by display or digitizing drivers. To workaround the problem, try choosing a standard VGA display driver and, if possible, a standard digitizing driver. If the printer driver installation can now be completed without a problem, try re-configuring the system with the non-standard device drivers.
  • When running other TSRs (memory resident programs), turn them off to verify if the driver installation will proceed. As above, try turning the TSR back on once installation is complete.
  • Improper computer system configuration. Verify that the computer system is configured properly for use with AutoCAD 12. Please refer to the AutoCAD documentation or, if necessary, contact the AutoCAD dealer for assistance.
  • Insufficient memory on the computer system. Verify that the computer system has enough RAM to properly run AutoCAD 12. Please refer to the AutoCAD documentation or, if necessary, contact the AutoCAD dealer for assistance.
HPCONFIG, HP RENDER or HPMPLOT Errors: Unknown Command
ISSUE: The HPCONFIG, HPRENDER, or HPMPLOT command gives an error: "Unknown command. Type ? for list of commands," but typing this does not work.
Solution
These are commands in AutoCAD, not in DOS. If they do not work in AutoCAD and:
Commands have been successfully used before
  • Try quitting AutoCAD (after saving work) and re-entering AutoCAD.
  • Try (after saving work) manually loading the driver with AutoCAD's application load utility by choosing: File/Applications.../File.../path to HPMPLOT.EXP/Load. Please refer to AutoCAD reference material for more information regarding this AutoCAD utility.
The installation of additional programs to AutoCAD may have created additional ACAD.ADS files. AutoCAD uses the ACAD.ADS file to automatically load the programs. AutoCAD will load the first ACAD.ADS file that is found and ignore any other copies. It will be necessary to either :
  • Load the driver manually, as described above
    OR
  • Append the necessary information to all copies of the ACAD.ADS file as described in the section below "Commands have never worked."
Commands have never worked
There may be a line missing in the ACAD.ADS file. This line should have been added automatically as part of the installation of the driver software. ACAD.ADS is normally found in AutoCAD Release 12's program subdirectory. A line similar to the following should appear in this file:
C:\ACADR12\DRV\HPGL2\HPMPLOT.EXP
Add this line to the ACAD.ADS file if it is not there.
