HP and Compaq PCs - Finding the ScanDisk Utility (Windows XP)

Issue:
ScanDisk is missing, or no longer under Programs.
Solution
ScanDisk is now called error checking. Use the following steps to scan a hard drive in Windows XP:
  1. Click Start, then My Computer .
  2. Right-click the drive that needs scanning and select Properties from the list.
  3. Click Tools.
    Figure : Hard disk tools
  4. Click Check Now.
  5. A Check Disk screen appears with two options.
    Figure : Check disk options
    • Select Automatically fix file system errors to avoid Windows prompting for permission to fix a file when it finds an incomplete or bad file.
    • Select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors to perform a thorough scan of the hard drive's surface. Windows will isolate any bad sectors that it finds so that these bad areas on the hard drive will not get used again. This can take a very long time but is one of the most important things in preventing future problems with troublesome hard drives.
  6. Click Start to start the process. If the scan continually restarts, then make sure that Window's hibernate feature is turned off inside power settings. Windows will probably need to check the hard drive upon restarting the computer.
