HP EliteBook 8440p Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing Wireless LAN Module

Introduction

This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the Wireless LAN module for the HP EliteBook 8440p Notebook PC.

Minimum skill level

The End User requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.

Tools required

  • Small, Phillips-head (P00 and P1) screwdrivers
  • Tweezers

The replacement part number will vary depending on the Wireless LAN module that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

The use of the Original Spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If your unit contains a part that is labelled with the Modified Spare number, the Modified Spare must be ordered as the replacement part. If your unit contains a part that is labelled with the Original Spare number, please order the Original Spare as the replacement part. In this case either the Original Spare or the Modified Spare may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

Wireless LAN module removal

  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:

    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2. Loosen the two captive P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the hard disk drive cover to the bottom of the notebook.
  3. Lift the hard disk drive cover and remove it.
  4. Lift the wireless LAN module cover and remove it.
  5. Carefully disconnect the two wireless antenna cables from the wireless LAN module by grasping the connectors with a small pair of needle nose pliers or tweezers.
    nota:
    Use care when disconnecting the wireless antenna cables from the wireless LAN module. Damaged cables or connectors can degrade notebook performance.
  6. Remove the two 3mm P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the wireless LAN module to the system board and allow it to release to the spring tension position.
  7. Grasp the wireless LAN module by the edges and pull gently to remove it.
  8. Place the wireless LAN module in a static dissipative bag.

Wireless LAN module replacement

  1. Remove the wireless LAN module from the static dissipative bag.
  2. Locate the alignment slot and align it to the board receptacle.
  3. Grasp the wireless LAN module by the edges and push gently to replace it.
  4. Press the wireless LAN module down and replace the two 3mm P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the wireless LAN module to the system board.
  5. Reconnect the two wireless antenna cables to the wireless LAN module.
    nota:
    Use care when connecting the wireless antenna cables to the wireless LAN module. Damaged cables or connectors can degrade notebook performance.
    Ensure the wireless LAN antenna cables are inserted into the guide notches located in the upper left corner of the Wireless LAN module bay.
  6. Toe the wireless LAN module cover into the enclosure.
  7. Toe the hard disk drive cover into the base enclosure.
  8. Tighten the two captive P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the hard disk drive cover to the bottom of the notebook.
